Comic Spotlight: Jim “Hot Pockets” Gaffigan

As a big fan of standup comedy, comedian Jim Gaffigan holds a bacon grease laden place in my cholesterol clogged heart.  I may be a bit biased as Mr. Gaffigan was born in raised in Chesterton, Indiana (a place where I lived for a few years post college) but he is one of the funniest and unique comedians around today.   While the name Jim Gaffigan might not sound all that familiar I am sure you have seen some of his work.

Jim Gaffigan is probably most famous for his bit poking fun of the microwave delicacy known as “Hot Pockets” – see video clip above.  Jim has also appeared several times on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Dr. Katz, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, That ’70s Show, Flight of the Conchords, Law and Order, and the TBS series My BoysMy Boys in my opinion is one of the most underrated sitcoms out there.  What makes it especially enjoyable is the fact that the comedy takes place in Chicago and is centered on a beat reporter for the Chicago Cubs.  Jim Gaffigan’s character Andy resides in Hoffman Estates and they constantly poke fun at the Chicagoland suburbs.  It’s too bad Jim Gaffigan is no longer a part of the show.  Jim has also appeared in several commercials for Sierra Mist with Micahel Ian Black- my favorite being the infamous “Holiday Hawk” (see below video).

Aside from Jim TV and movie career, he has released 7 standup comedy albums including:  Luigi’s Doghouse (2001), Economics II (2001), More Moo Moos (2003), The Last Supper (2004), Doing My Time (2004), Beyond the Pale (2006), and King Baby (2009).  Jim is currently on tour promoting his latest release King Baby.  Remain tour dates are listed below.

Smashing Pumpkins to Play Benefit Show at the Metro Chicago

Billy Corgan and the Smashing Pumpkins will be performing a benefit concert with Kill Hannah on Tuesday night July 27th at the  Metro Chicago .  This special show will help raise money to pay for the medical bills of Matthew Leone who was hospitalized with severe brain trauma after intervening to stop a woman he passed on the street from being beaten by her husband.  Tickets for this show were distributed in a unique way – a raffle.

As a Chicagoan and lifelong Smashing Pumpkin fan, I decided to purchase two raffle tickets.  On Saturday at 2:52 PM I got an email from Pete at Metro Chicago informing me that I had won 2 Smashing Pumpkins tickets!  I in no way expected to win and merely thought of the $20 I spent on raffle tickets as a modest donation to a good cause. I have not been this excited to see a concert in a really long time.  The Pumpkins both began and ended (albeit briefly) their musical career at the historic Metro.  This show will mark the first time in almost 10 years that Billy Corgan and crew will play this intimate venue.  If you’re a SP fan there is not a better place to see them live.  I have seen the Pumpkins 13 times and I will never forget their last show at the Metro.  If the show is half as good I will certainly be in for a treat.

Smashing Pumpkin fans had the ability to purchase raffle tickets for $10 each or could purchase Balcony VIP seats for $100, or VIP Soundcheck tickets for $500.  Both VIP ticket packages sold out in minutes as this was the only way to guarantee admission to this benefit concert.  All proceeds from the raffle and concert will go to the Matthew Leone Fund at Sweet Relief. Although the raffle is over and the winners of tickets have been announced, you can still contribute to the Matthew Leone Fund at

The Smashing Pumpkins are also currently on a US tour promoting their new internet album Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.  According to sources the Pumpkins will be releasing 44 songs over the course of the year and can be downloaded for free at  If you were not fortunate enough to win tickets to the SP show at the Metro, below is a list of other tour dates in which you can see them play live!

Out with the Lou, In with the Sandberg?

Sandberg next cubs manager?

Hall of Famer and Chicago Cubs legend Ryne Sandberg might be in live to be the next Cubs manager after Lou Piniella annouces his retirement.

Just today Chicago Cubs manager Lou Piniella annouced that he will retire as Cubs manager at the conclusion of the 2010 baseball season.   During  Sweet Lou’s tenure, the Chicago Cubs went from lovable losers to annual contenders but failed to bring home the ultimate prize– a World Series Championship.  Lou Piniella was supposed to be the answer to a team loaded with talent that just didn’t have that killer instinct.  Lou’s firey personality and sometimes comical on-the-field antics were supposed to motivate as well as keep the players loose.  During Lou Piniella time as Cubs manager, they made the playoffs twice (in 2007 and 2008) but ended up getting swept in the first round both years

Today, the Cubs are in a serious free fall laiden with aging players (and the awful contracts to go along with them).  Cub fans have little to be excited about moving forward with the idea of Alphonso Soriano (19M/year), Kosuke Fukudome (14M/year) and Carlos Zambrano (18.8M/year) locked up for several more years with expensive back-ended contracts.  Mired in yet another disappointing season of baseball at Wrigley Field, Cubs fans are looking for anything to be optimistic about.  The only bright spots this year have been the play closer Carlos Marmol and rookies Starlin Castro and Tyler Colvin.

That all changed today as Lou Piniella annouced he is out after 4 years as the Cubs Manager.  While a change of manager typically means little to an organization not expected to be relevant anytime soon, the Cubs have a manager in waiting that has Cub fans drooling – Ryne Sandberg.  For the past 4 seasons, Ryno has been quiently working his way up the Cubs managerial depth chart.  In 2007-08 Sandberg managed the Peoria Chiefs before moving up to manage the AAA Tennessee. This year Ryne Sandberg took over the helm of the Iowa Cubs.  Ryne Sandberg is the only MLB Hall of Famer to manage in the minor leagues.  Although Sandberg is far from being a lock to land the Cubs full time job, odds are in his favor.  Ryne Sandberg was (and still is) the face of the organization to many Cub fans who grew up in the 1980′s and 90′s (myself included).

While all of Cub Nation is buzzing with the prospect of Ryne Sandberg returning to Wrigley Field to manage the Cubs- Lou Piniella and the 2010 Cubs are still playing.  With the Cubs on the cusp of dropping out of contention 10.5 games out of first place, tickets are readily available in our Chicago Cubs Tickets section – many tickets below face value.  If you are looking for Cheap Chicago Cubs Tickets also be sure to check out who special in Chicagoland event tickets.

Dog Days of Ticket Sales

NFL Training Camps Set To Open

NFL players will be reporting to camp soon- That means ticket sales for NFL games will be heating up.

It’s no secret that July is typically the slowest month for event ticket sales.  With both the NBA and NHL seasons over the only thing driving ticket sales are summer concerts and Major League Baseball.  While concert tickets are typically big sellers, most tickets for the most popular summer shows took place back in the spring.  There is usually a rush of ticket sale immediately before some popular shows like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber but nowhere near the levels of immediately after the tickets go on sale.

Major League Baseball tickets are not much different.  Opening day, inter-league games, and the All-Star Game can have some big time demand but ticket sales overall usually fizzle as many teams fall out of the playoff hunt and begin selling off players with the wait til next year mentality (e.g. Chicago Cubs).  While MLB tickets do begin to surge as the playoff races heat up, that is not until August-September when fans begin to get excited about baseball again.

So while ticket sales may be slow in July, this is a great time to plan ahead and begin your online marketing campaigns for upcoming big sellers before the competition does.  If you are serious about making ticket sales now is the time to start promoting NFL and College Football tickets.  Believe it our not NFL training camps will begin to open up very soon and preseason games are just 1 month away.  The begining of August is typically when NFL fans began to get excited and start planning which games they want to attend in 2010.

NCAA Football is much the same.  Summer camps are already underway and student will be returning to campus in a little over a month and a half.  This season of College Football is certain to be one of the more memorable seasons as several teams will be changing conferences and several others are rumored to be doing the same.  To help you in your marketing efforts, below is a list of the most viewed NFL and College football tickets viewed at
