Alright, so let’s jump on the Amy Winehouse death scandal train, shall we? As I’m sure you’ve heard already, the 27-year old singer died on Saturday, July 24th after a very public struggle with drugs and alcohol. Her body was discovered by a member of her security team, who called an ambulance, but it was too late for Winehouse. As of this posting, Police have said her cause of death is “unexplained.” Winehouse is yet another musician to join the infamous 27 Club (a.k.a. Forever 27 Club, Club 27 or the Curse of 27). This is a group of influential musicians who all died at the age of 27. Other famous rock musicians in this club include Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain. Amy’s funeral was today.
Amy Winehouse was credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and soul music, and also for revitalizing British music. Other acts to follow her footsteps include Adele, Duffy, Lily Allen, Florence + the Machine, Lady Gaga and many others. Rapper, Jay-Z, gave credit to Amy for revitalizing British Music.
Winehouse’s career really began with her 2003 debut album, Frank, which was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her next album, Back to Black, in 2006, earned her six Grammy Award nominations and five wins. That tied her for the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and made her the first British female to win five Grammys. In 2007, she released the song, Rehab, which might have been the anthem of her life.
Since 2007, she’s been plagued with legal troubles and well as well documented struggles with drug, alcohol abuse and violence. Her former husband, Blake Fielder-Civil is serving time in prison.
Amy even recorded a song with Tony Bennett recently for his next album, Duets II, which is schedule for release on September 20th.
While the musical community has lost a valuable contributor, many people have a hard time feeling sympathetic towards her plight as she was given many opportunities to straighten herself out. Whatever the case may be, RIP Amy Winehouse.
