Being a Chicagoan and lifelong Chicago Blackhawks fan I thought it apt to write a post about the Blackhawks making it to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1992. The last time the Blackhawks brought home Lord Stanley’s Cup was all the way back in 1961, well before I was born. While I have no memories of the ’61 Championship team, I do have fond memories of that 1992 team led by the like of Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour, Steve Larmer, Michel Goulet, Brent Sutter, and Brian Machment. Even with the Bulls and Michael Jordan in the midst of bring home 6 NBA titles, hockey was huge in Chicago.
With the NHL perpetually known as the 4th major sport, nothing could be better for the sport than the Blackhawks, one of the “Original Six”, returning to the National Stage. Since 1992 the Blackhawks have struggled to retain fans and put W’s on the board. But in a short period of time the Blackhawks have become relevant again. What is scary is that the 2010 Blackhawks are the youngest team in the NHL led by the likes of Jonathan Toews (22), Patrick Kane (21), Dave Bollland (23), Troy Brouwer (24), Dustin Byfuglien (25), Ben Eager (26), Niklas Hjalmarsson (22), Duncan Keith (26), Patrick Sharp (28), Andrew Ladd (24), Brent Seabrook (25), Kris Versteeg (24), and rookie goaltender Antii Niemi (26).
