Spring is Here… Opening Day 2014

2014 MLB Opening DayAlthough the first day of Spring was officially on March 20th, we think Spring really starts the same day as the Major League Baseball season- opening day.  With opening day happening tomorrow (Monday March 31st), we thought it would be fitting to make our predictions for the upcoming season.  As a Chicago Cubs fan, spring is the time for optimism.  A time where every team still has a chance to reach the post season no matter how big or how small the payroll.  While, over the last several years, parity has increased across the MLB landscape – most experts still pick the big spending teams like the New York Yankees or the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The bigger and more interesting question is who will become this year’s Pittsburgh Pirates?  With that in mind, here are my picks for the 2014 MLB Season.

National League

NL East – Washington Nationals:  The Nationals were a big disappointment last year but they will be ready to rebound.  Bryce Harper will be ready to compete for a MVP crown this year.

NL Central – St. Louis Cardinals:  Hard to pick against St. Louis here… They made it all the way to the World Series last season only to lose to the Braves.  This Cardinals team is loaded with young talent that should only be better this year.  As much as I hate to admit it, unless they implode, expect them to cruise to another NL Central Title.

NL West –  Los Angeles Dodgers:  Again not a surprising pick here but the L.A. Dodgers are absolutely loaded with talent.  The got off to a slow start last season only to come on strong at the end – that could happen again this year but I just can’t see the Giants or Diamondbacks running away with the division early.

NL Wildcard Teams: Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies

American League

AL East – Tampa Bay Rays:  While most are picking the Red Sox or Yankees here, I just can’t pick against a team with an abundance of young talent and the best manager in the game (Joe Maddon).  Watch out for Desmond Jennings and Chris Archer this year!

AL Central – Kansas City Royals: Ok, here is my out-on-a-limb pick.  Every year I think the KC Royals will be much better than they turn out to be.  Maybe it is my inner Cub fan coming out but I really think this will be the year the Royals put it all together.  Watch out for Yordano Ventura!

AL West – Oakland A’s:  On paper the A’s look like nothing all that special.  However, they never look all that special on paper but Billy Beane always seems to find a way to keep the Athletics competitive.  With not a whole lot of dominant teams in the AL West you have to go with the team that will likely be the most consistent.

AL Wildcard Teams:  Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers

Top 10 College Football Games Week 5, 2013

Despite some pretty intriguing match-ups, Week 4 left college football fans a little disappointed.  There were no major upsets and the vast majority of games featuring ranked opponents turned out to be blowouts- see Louisville demolishing FIO 72-0, Ohio State pounding Florida A&M 76-0, Miami beating Savannah State 77-7, and Washington beating Idaho State 56-0.  The exception to that rules proved to be the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Michigan Wolverines.  Both teams ended up winning but not in very impressive fashion.  While Notre Dame eked out a narrow win over a MSU team with a pretty solid defense, the Wolverines almost choke to UCONN of all teams!

Georgia1However, week 5 promises to be much better as we have 4 games featuring two teams ranked in the top 25.  This will likely be the trend moving forward as conference play is now in full swing.  Of these match-ups, the one garnering most of the attention this week is the Georgia LSU game.  The Bulldogs are just 2-1 but their only loss came at the hands of the #3 Clemson Tigers.  The LSU Tigers are sitting at 4-0 but have yet to play any ranked teams.  The Tigers offense seems just fine but they do have some question marks on the defensive side of the ball.  This game has some huge BCS implications – a loss for the Bulldogs and they can say so long to any hope for a BCS game!

With the recap of week 4 action complete, let’s take a look at the Top 10 college football game for Week 5.

US Men’s Soccer Team Advances to 2014 World Cup

Soccer TicketsOn Tuesday, September 10th, the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team beat Mexico in a 2-0 victory.  This match was a 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying game and this win earned the USMNT their way into the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The USMNT fate was sealed for the 2014 tournament after Honduras competed against Panama in Tegucigalpa in a 2-2 tie.  This is USA’s seventh successive FIFA World Cup Berth and 10th in total.

The USA vs. Mexico match was an event to be seen and tensions were high for both teams.  A point of interest, this was the fourth time in a row in a World Cup Qualifying cycle that USA beat Mexico 2-0 at Crew Stadium. Strange, huh?

The stars of the match were Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan.   Johnson scored his 19th goal of his career and 12th in a World Cup event.  One of his goals included a header off of Donovan’s corner kick in the 49th minute.  Donovan put the proverbial nail in the coffin in the 78th minute with his goal.

The USMNT broke records this year by winning 14 games in a calendar year.  This is an improvement over their 2013 record which was 14-3-2 and 13 wins in 2009 and 2005.

The next game for the 2014 World Cup Qualifying takes place on October 11th against Jamaica in Kansas City, KS at Sporting Park, though USA already has their plane tickets booked for Brazil.  The match will kick off at 5:30 PM C.T.

On October 15th, the US Men’s Team will finish up the Hexagonal when they play Panama at Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City.

As far as other teams go, Costa Rica qualified for the World Cup with a 1-1 tie against last place Jamaica. Costa Rica tapered off to second place, one point following USA in the CONCACAF standings, and Honduras is in third place with 11 points.

For the World Cup, the top three teams qualify undoubtedly. The fourth place team after will ultimately compete against Oceania Zone winner New Zealand playoff for a chance to make it to Brazil.

After the loss to USA, Mexico tied for fourth place with Panama with eight points.

Top 10 College Football Games 2013 (Week 3)

Another week of college football action is in the books and boy were there some outstanding games that certainly shook up the rankings.  In perhaps the biggest game of the young season, the Michigan Wolverines upset the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 41-30.  The loss for the Irish came largely at the hands on their porous defense that couldn’t seem to stop the Wolverines who racked up 460 yards of total offense in front of 115,000 fans.  The win propelled Michigan all the way up to #11 in the FBS Associated Press Top 25 while the loss knocked Notre Dame all the way down to #21.

MiamiHurricanesNotre Dame was no alone in getting upset this week.  In another high profile game, the Miami Hurricanes took down the rival Florida Gators by a score of 21-16.  The Hurricanes were absolutely dominated by the Gators offense giving up over 200 yards more of total offense.  However, the Gators turned the ball over 5 times, including 4 in the red zone, to essentially hand the game over to the in-state rivals.

This past weekend also saw the unranked BYU Cougars take down the the Texas Longhorns 4-021.  The Longhorns were bounced out of the top 25 after being previously ranked as high as #15.  In addition, the USC Trojans (preisouly ranked #25) lost to the hapless Washington State Cougars and the #5 South Carolina Gamecocks lost to the #11 Georgia Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs moved up to #9 in the nation while South Carolina dropped to #13.

With the recap of week 2 action complete, let’s take a look at the Top 10 college football game for Week 3.

Top 10 College Football Games 2013 (Week 2)

The 2013 college football season certainly started out with a bang last week with some dominant performances and some big upsets.  The biggest upset of the week goes to the Eastern Washington Eagles who bested the #25 ranked Oregon State Beavers 49-46.  It’s one thing for any ranked team to lose to an unranked opponent in the opening week but, what makes matters worse is that Eastern Washington is a lowly FCS team (formerly NCAA Division I-AA).  Not a good week to be a Beaver fan!  The other big upset was #19 Boise State Broncos losing to the Washington Huskies.  While Boise State losing to a PAC-12 team isn’t shocking by any means, getting blown out 38-6 certainly is.

In addition to the upsets noted above, week 1 was also filled with great drama and story lines.  In perhaps the most interesting game Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and the #7 Texas A&M Aggies took on the Rice Owls.  The game itself wouldn’t normally be all that interesting except for the fact that the Aggies star quarterback was suspended for the first half of the game due to some questionable off season behavior that included signing autographs for a shady memorabilia dealer.   Johnny football came in after halftime and did not disappoint.  He threw 3 touchdown passes on 6/8 passing and 94 yards.  If that wasn’t enough to keep the eye balls glued to the field, Manziel mimiced signing an autograph while getting up from a tackle and later was ejected for unsportmanslike conduct for pointing at the scoreboard after a TD pass in the fourth quarter.  Regardless of what you think of Manziel and the Aggies, they will be interesting to watch all season long.

In the Tickifieds Game of the Week, #17 Michigan will take on the #14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

In the Tickifieds Game of the Week, #17 Michigan will take on the #14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Even with all the exciting college football that took place in the opening week, it should be even more exciting in week 2.  In our GOTW (game of the week), #17 Michigan will take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.  Both teams are coming off impressive week 1 wins.  The Wolverines hold the series edge against the Irish and will be looking for revenge from last season.   Check out our list below for the full list of the Top 10 College Football game of week 2:
