The OSU Buckeyes’ Jared Sullinger is still hands-down the best low-post scorer in the field and the team has the most fruitful group of 3-point shooters. The Buckeyes absolutely hammered George Mason.
The experienced Kansas Jayhawks swept the Illinois Fighting Illini in the latter half of Sunday night. Coach Bill Self has done an excellent job with the team throughout their tumultuous season.
The Duke Blue Devils got a real scare from the Michigan Wolverines, winning by a mere 2 points in the Charlotte tournament. The duo of freshman Kyrie Irving (guard) and Nolan Smith created quite the backcourt tandem.
Perhaps one of the biggest upsets from this past weekend’s tournaments was the Butler. Where did they come from? They crushed topped ranked Pittsburgh 71 – 70 in the last new seconds. They will next be matched up again Wisconsin on Friday morning.
Also of note is Marquette throwing Syracuse to the curb. With 51 seconds to go on the clock, Syracuse’s Dion Waiters threw his sideline inbounds pass too high and close to the midcourt line. Scoop Jardine toed over the line on his jump to retreive the ball for a backcourt violation. The messy pass cost them the game.
“I thought I had him and I was just trying to throw the pass where I thought he could catch it,” Waiters said. “I don’t know what happened.”
VCU Rams should not go unmentioned in this article. They completed outplayed third-seeded Purdue Boilermakers on Sunday 94-76. This was their third win in 5 days. The Rams pressured Purdue, broke through its defense and won their reward in layups. This is the Rams first trip to the Sweet 16.
“A week ago, we thought we were done,” said the persistent point guard Joey Rodriguez, who had 12 points, 11 assists and no turnovers in 34 minutes.
“And now, we’re here in the Sweet 16. Anything can happen now.”
So, the 4 Regional Tournaments cities are sure to have a large draw.
Newark, N.J.: North Carolina has historically always shown up for events in the New York area. Ohio State fans ALWAYS travel for football and will travel for a golden child favorite basketball team. Marquette’s fans are very faithful, too. This East Regional Tournament Tickets will be hard to get.
New Orleans, LA: A case could be made for any of the four teams to win in the Southeast Tournament: No. 2 Florida, No. 3 BYU, No. 4 Wisconsin or No. 8 Butler, all are equally challenged. These are the dark horses. Watch out for them.
Anaheim, CA: Arizona and San Diego State are the to, all intents and purposes, home teams in Anaheim, Calif. The Arizona fans will vastly outnumber the Duke fans, and perhaps that will help them. Who knows? The same will hold true with San Diego over Connecticut.
San Antonio, TX: The Kansas Jayhawks were the only single-digit seed to advance to the Sweet 16 out of the Southwest as surprises were plentiful the first weekend. Joining the Jayhawks are three double-digit seeds: No. 10 Florida State, No. 11 VCU and No. 12 Richmond
At the end of the day, most sports commentators are picking Kansas to bring home the big prize. Be sure to watch!
