2010 Kentucky Wildcats Football Preview

Randall Cobb of the Kentucky Wildcats

Randall Cobb and the Kentucky Wildcats will look to make some noise in the SEC this season.

Kentucky Wildcats football tickets will be going on sale on Wednesday and fans are excited about the Wildcats prospects for the 2010 season.  Although Kentucky has a new head coach, Joker Phillips has been with the program for some time and will bring some continuity to a program that has had 4 straight bowl appearances and has won at least 7 games each year.  Coach Phillips has openly stated his desire to take Kentucky football to a whole new level but they have some major obstacles in an extremely tough SEC that includes the likes of Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, and LSU.

On offense the Wildcats should be on par with the best in the SEC.  They have one of the most dangerous weapons in the SEC in wide receivers Randall Cobb and senior Chris Matthews.  Cobb is also an impact player as a return man and as a Wildcat back.  The big question is who will throw him the ball as quarterbacks Mike Hartline and Morgan Newton will be competing for the job.  The Wildcats also have an explosive tailback in Derrick Locke who gained 907 yards (191.2 yard per game average) on the ground last season.

While the offense is looking tough this season there are many questions on the defensive side of the ball.  The Wildcats lost their best defensive lineman Corey Peters, their 2 best linebackers in Micah Johnson and Sam Maxwell, and perhaps the best cornerback in Kentucky history in Trevard Lindley.  Last season the Wildcats gave up a whooping 182.9 yards rushing per game and one could only imagine it’s not getting any better after losing so many talented defenders.  Kentucky is going to have to rely on inexperienced and undersized players to tame some high powered SEC offenses.
