Amy Winehouse – her life and influence

Alright, so let’s jump on the Amy Winehouse death scandal train, shall we?  As I’m sure you’ve heard already, the 27-year old singer died on Saturday, July 24th after a very public struggle with drugs and alcohol.  Her body was discovered by a member of her security team, who called an ambulance, but it was too late for Winehouse.  As of this posting, Police have said her cause of death is “unexplained.”  Winehouse is yet another musician to join the infamous 27 Club (a.k.a. Forever 27 Club, Club 27 or the Curse of 27).  This is a group of influential musicians who all died at the age of 27.  Other famous rock musicians in this club include Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison and Kurt Cobain.  Amy’s funeral was today.

Amy Winehouse was credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and soul music, and also for revitalizing British music.  Other acts to follow her footsteps include Adele, Duffy, Lily Allen, Florence + the Machine, Lady Gaga and many others.  Rapper, Jay-Z, gave credit to Amy for revitalizing British Music.

Winehouse’s career really began with her 2003 debut album, Frank, which was critically successful in the UK and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.  Her next album, Back to Black, in 2006, earned her six Grammy Award nominations and five wins.  That tied her for the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night and made her the first British female to win five Grammys.  In 2007, she released the song, Rehab, which might have been the anthem of her life.

Since 2007, she’s been plagued with legal troubles and well as well documented struggles with drug, alcohol abuse and violence.  Her former husband, Blake Fielder-Civil is serving time in prison.

Amy even recorded a song with Tony Bennett recently for his next album, Duets II, which is schedule for release on September 20th.

While the musical community has lost a valuable contributor, many people have a hard time feeling sympathetic towards her plight as she was given many opportunities to straighten herself out.  Whatever the case may be, RIP Amy Winehouse.

Adele Reschedules North American Tour Dates

If you don’t know who Adele is by now, you really should.  She is a British singer with a HUGE following.  Her soulful voice has attracted her a lot of attention both critically and with the masses.  Many huge stars, including Beyoncé, have sited Adele as an inspiration, even at her ripe old age of 23.  Her sound has been compared to a cross between Duffy and Amy Winehouse.  Her popularity is continuing to skyrocket.

Nielsen SoundScan’s senior vice president of analytics Dave Bakula told MTV News. “You’ve got an artist here who wasn’t a household name prior to this record coming out, so you do still have that discovery process going on with her.

“What it really goes to show is the fact that there still are that many people discovering the album every week,” he added. “I think it shows a lot about the latent demand that is out there for great music.”

Her current tour for her second studio album, 21, is going incredibly well.  Many performances had to be added or moved to larger venues to accommodate her adoring fans.  Earlier this month, Adele had to cancel her North American tour due to laryngitis.  She was “devastated” to have to cancel, but she didn’t want to risk permanently injuring herself.  Her tour commences on August 9th in Vancouver.

Top Weekend Events June 3rd – 5th

Can you believe it’s actually Wednesday again?  Memorial Day Weekend just absolutely blew by.

If you look at this upcoming weekend’s top events list, one thing is very apparent.  Summer concert season is upon us!  People want to go hear live music!

With the exception of the Memorial Golf Tournament (which was also on last week’s list), the musical genre runs from pop to country to jam bands to alternative.  People want it all!

Brett Dennen is an up and coming folk/pop singer from Northern Cali.  His music has been featured on a number of television shows including: Roadtrip Nation on PBS, Grey’s Anatomy, House, Scrubs and The Unit.  His fourth album was just released in April.  Keep an eye on this guy, his celebrity is about to sky rocket.

For your other fairly new artist on the list, there is The Script and Adele.  The Script will be playing in Central Park this weekend and already has an exceptionally loyal fan base.   They are an Irish indie rock band.  Their music has been featured on video games and TV shows like 90210, Ghost Whisperer, The Hills, East Enders and The Vampire Diaries.  All of those shows are incredibly popular with the teen/early 20’s crowd.  And, as if you didn’t already know, Adele tickets are hot, hot hot!!!  Any remaining available tickets to her shows shoot up in price very quickly.  Her rise in fame in the US is correlated very closely with her 2008 appearance on Saturday Night Live.  She had already attracted much attention in her home nation of Britan. She has gained much acclaim and recognition both commercially and critically.  She is another to keep your eye on very closely.

Fan’s perennial favorites; U2, Phish, and Kenny Chesney show up again on this list as they so often have in the past.

New Kids on the Block featuring Back Street Boys (NKOTBBSB) finally makes their first appearance on this list with their Boston show.  The 80’s boy band teamed up with the 90’s boy band in a cross country, many stop tour that is very popular with ladies of those generations.  Tickets can still be found for reasonable prices.
