Coldplay to tour North America – Spring/Summer 2012

Coldplay is finally coming to North America.  Not a moment too soon, either!  Coldplay, led by front man, Chris Martin, have toured Europe since the October 2011 release of their album, “Mylo Xyloto”, now the tour is finally coming stateside in two separate legs in spring and summer of 2012.  The spring leg will mostly focus on the Pacific Northwest markets.

The European shows have been a huge success thus far, with shows selling out within seconds. Tickets mostly go on sale to the public on December 17th, with the exception of two shows; the Hollywood Bowl (Jan. 9) and Chicago (Dec. 19).

The reason for the two legs of the tour is that Coldplay is already booked to perform at seven UK stadiums as a complement to the group’s current European tour dates.

Coldplay has performed in the states as recently as August 2011 as a headliner at Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park.  Previously, they supported the award-winning “Viva La Vida” with a tour through the states in 2009.

Coldplay has been together since 1996 and they received world-wide recognition in 2000 for the release of their single “Yellow” which was quickly followed by their debut album, Parachutes.  The band has won numerous awards throughout their career, including six Brit Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and seven Grammy Awards.  They have sold over 50 million records worldwide so far.

The band is famously philanthropic.  They are active supports of various social and political causes including Oxfam’s Make Trade Fair, Amnesty International, Band Aid 20, Live 8 Sound Relief, Hope for Haiti Now and the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Chris Martin is married to A-list actress, Gwyneth Paltrow and they live in London with their two small children, Apple and Moses.  Martin credits the bands U2, A-Ha, Oasis and Muse being big inspirations for him.

Top Weekend Events Septemeber 23 – 25

Hooray Wednesday!

I’m going to go ahead and call it that the summer concert season is officially dead.  In its place, officially, is College Football!

There are certainly some exciting games this weekend!  The top game everyone seems to want to attend is the West Virginia vs. Louisiana State game.  These two teams are competitively matched.  LSU has an absolute top notch defense, but the Mountaineer’s quarterback, Geno Smith, is a formidable opponent.

The Fight Irish vs. Panthers game is surely another tough call on who would win.  Pitt’s offense and defense have a good balance, but is it enough to show up Notre Dame?

Colorado is expected to sweep Ohio State, particularly with their star QB, Tyler Hansen, and RB Rodney Stewart.

Boise State is certainly another team to keep a keen eye on.  Since the Broncos near slaughter of the Georgia Bulldogs at the start of the season, they’re on a fast track in the national title race.   QB, Kellen Moore, is one of the best and most effectual quarterbacks currently playing in the NCAA and is expected to shatter multiple records, including most touchdowns and most wins.

For your non-football related activities this week, the hot one is definitely the 3-day i Heart Radio Festival in Las Vegas.  The festival will feature top acts like LADY GAGA ,  JAY-Z , COLDPLAY , STEVEN TYLER, THE BLACK EYED PEAS,  KENNY CHESNEY, ALICIA KEY,  JENNIFER LOPEZ, CARRIE UNDERWOOD, JANE’S ADDICTION, NICKI MINAJ , DAVID GUETTA, RASCAL FLATTS, BRUNO MARS, KELLY CLARKSON, SUBLIME WITH ROME With special guest performances by USHER, STING and JEFF BECK.  It is one FULL line-up!!

Jeff Dunham is in the same field as Terry Fator.  They are both master ventriloquistsTime Magazine wrote about his puppet characters, “All of them are politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting and ill tempered.”

Top Weekend Events 09/16 – 09/18

Welcome to your Wednesday top weekend events post!  This list is absolutely dominated by college football games.  A couple other things snuck in there, but for the most part, NCAA Football games are what’s drawing the fan’s eye these days.

The top event for this weekend, however, is not football, but the Austin City Limits Festival.  The Austin City Limits originally started as a live celebration of Texas music recorded American Public television music program by the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS).   It later evolved into the Austin City Limits Music Festival featuring regional, national and international artists with a wide range of musical styles including jazz, alt. rock, alt. country, folk and jam band.  The ACL Festival is an annual three-day festival with over 130 acts!  Over 70,000 fans attend each day.   Some of the big names for this year include Coldplay, Sara Bareilles, Cold War Kids, Foster the People, Kanye West,  Young the Giant, Stevie Wonder, My Morning Jacket, Alison Krauss, Social Distortion, Randy Newman, Airborne Toxic Event and Arcade Fire.  Not a bad line-up!

The Red Sox also make another appearance after a long absence.  They’ll be taking on the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Red Sox are expected to with the AL Wild Card this year.

Outside of that, it’s football, football, football!  The top NCAA Football game is the Florida State Seminoles versus the Oklahoma Sooners.  These two teams are two of the most talked about and followed programs in the history of the game.  This will be their first face-off in nearly a decade.  This game could send FSU back into the national spot light it so famously controlled or it could prove the Landry Jones was just what Oklahoma needed to send them to the National Championship.   While Oklahoma seemed to struggle a bit with their first game win against Utah State, FSU easily dominated Samford with a 59-6 win, a nice feat for Coach Jimbo Fisher’s debut.  This should be a very exciting game!

Wow, can you believe it’s August already??  What happened to July?

As people soak up the last month of summer, fans are still coming out for all the hot concerts and sporting events.

Phish, once again, holds the top position.  Phish like Dave Matthews Band are pretty much the epitome of summer tour bands.  They are to be expected.

According to Redbook Magazine, Taylor Swift was the top concert people wanted to see this summer.  Her concert sales, even on the secondary ticket marketplace certainly correlate with this.

The Vans Warped Tour is on the list again for their Denver tour dates.  Some of the notable bands playing at Invesco Field include A Day to Remember, Against Me!, Attack Attack!, Gym Class Heros, Less Than Jake, Relient K, The Devil Wears Prada, The Expendables and We Came As Romans.

Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park is another big draw this weekend.  The top headliners for this weekend’s tour include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Other tops acts playing in Perry Farrell’s 20th anniversary vision include My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, The Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Beirut, Explosions in the Sky, Death from Above 1979, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Flogging Molly, Atmosphere, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, OK GO, Local Natives, The Kills, White Lies, Portugal. The Gipsy Kings music has been described as “Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk.”  The band started in Southern France in the 1970’s and have been rising in popularity ever since.

Once again, the European soccer teams have shown up again on the top weekend list.    Like Manchester United and Real Madrid earlier this summer, expect  FC Barcelona to show the American team who the real soccer champs are.  Fans are still very excited to have these matches on their home turf and are wanting to see them live.
