Top Weekend Events – June 24 – 26

Woo hoo, the weekend is almost upon us!
This Saturday appears to be the most popular day to get out and go see some shows or sporting events. Fans want to get out of the house and enjoy great summertime activities!
I think there is a tie between the top two events this weekend. The CONCACAF Men’s Finals Soccer Gold Cup Event is going on this Saturday in beautiful Pasadena. The competitors in the Finals will be decided in the Semifinals, which are happening today in Washington D.C. and East Rutherford, NJ. The teams competing today are United States vs. Panama and Honduras vs. Mexico. Those are all teams with exceptionally loyal fans, particularly Mexico. This will be a hot event.
The other hot event on the weekend is the Taylor Swift show happening in Boston. This particular event was flagged multiple times in the top weekend events list. She is also playing at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, June 26th. Taylor’s next few stops land her in Greensboro, NC, Knoxville, TN and Louisville, KY.
Also of note, Mr. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, has two weekend shows making the list. His most recent album, Ukulele Songs, with a live DVD named Water on the Road, was released on May 31st of this year. These two shows are part of his month-long tour which started on June 15th and will conclude on July 15th at Seattle’s Benaroya Hall. Glen Hansard from The Swell Season and The Frames joins him on his brief tour.
Vans Warped Tour is making many stops across the US. The Dallas show seems to be particularly popular. The Dallas event features the following line up 3OH!3, A Day to Remember, Against Me!, Less Than Jake, Madina Lake, Relient K, Simple Plan, The Devil Wears Prada, Unwritten Law, and MANY others.
Sade is a relatively vintage band from England that formed in 1983. The band is a blend of R&B, soul, jazz, funk and soft rock. Their sixth studio album, Solider of Love, was released on February 8th, 2010. This is their first album of new material in nearly a decade. Sade’s global tour, Sade Live, kicked off in April 2011.
Some baseball finally made the list! I feel it’s been kind of slow season for baseball this year. East meets west with the Oakland A’s traveling to Philadelphia. The Reds and Orioles game, I’m kind of shocked to see on the list, but if there’s apparently a strong interest.
At this rate, Jimmy Buffett and Rascal Flatts are a given on the list. Expect them to remain on the top weekend events list for the remainder of the summer.

Hot Holiday Tickets and Events

Happy Cyber Monday!

The holidays have crashed upon us.  This is also a huge season for shows, concerts and events.  People want to get out and do things.  It is also the season of giving.  Tickets make EXCELLENT gifts for any and all.  For the week ending November 28, the top events were (in chronological order)*:

1. The Radio City Christmas Spectacular.    Started in 1933, the show has become a New York Tradition with more than a million visitors a year.  This annual musical holiday stage show features the women’s dance group the Rockettes and performs at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City. This year, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular will run until December 30th

2.) Wicked.  The Tony Award winning show follows Elphaba(firstly explaining her green skin!) and her relationship with Glinda through school, shared loved interests and later on Elphaba’s public and political fall from grace all before Dorothy came to Oz.  This is an exceptionally smart and well thought out musical and has broken box office records all over the country.  The show is playing throughout the country.

3.) Kid Rock.  Surprised?  Don’t be.  This actor/singer-songwriter and rapper from Detroit, Mi, has a large, exceptionally devoted following.  His shows pack huge amphitheatres.  His five Grammy nominations don’t hurt either.

4.) Trans-Siberian Orchestra.  Who doesn’t love hard rock and classical music fused together?  This is a very unique concert experience with massive light show, lasers, dozens of pyrotechnics, moving trusses, video screens, and other effects that are synchronized to the actual music.  TSO also has multiple city tour stops throughout the country and runs through December 30th.

5.) Taylor Swift.   Ms. Swift just announced her upcoming American  leg of her Speak Now tour.  She is hot, hot, hot right now and will pull huge crowds from multiple demographics.  She has universal appeal.

6.) Big 12 Championship: Oklahoma Sooner.  Playing on December 4th at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, TX, this Championship game pits the Sooners against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  Ticket prices for this are still somewhat reasonable, so loyal fans will be coming.

7.) Jersey Boys.  This very fun musical follows the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons as they journey from from the garage to incredible popularity. Fans will be treated to songs like “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Oh, What a Night”.   The three main locations currently for Jersey Boys is Las Vegas at the Palazzo Theater, New York City at the Virgina/August – Wilson Theater and Philadelphia at the Forrest Theater.

8.) George Strait, Reba McEntire and Lee Ann Womack.  Three huge country stars on one stage.  Kicking off on January 14th, 2011 in Austin, Texas travels primarily though the south and ending their run in April.

9.) Bon Jovi.  So much fun.  Whether you’re an old fan of them, or a more recent fan, there is something for everyone.  They’re finishing up their Circle Tour and kicking off the North American leg of the tour in Feb 9th in University Park, PA and finishing up Vancouver at the end of March.  People LOVE Bon Jovi.   Do not overlook their love of him.

10. Usher .  He recently released an extended play and deluxe edition of his album Raymond vs. Raymond which featured the hit song OMG, called Versus.    Usher has many tour stops planned throughout December.

So there you have it!  The most popular events of the last week.  Best of luck to you.

Taylor Swift New Tour Dates 11

On Black Wednesday, Taylor Swift announced her upcoming her 2011 World Tour dates.  This is the much anticiapted tour following her success with her album, Speak Now, which was released on October 25th, 2010.  This is an exciting album due to the fact that 20-year-old country songstress wrote the album completely by herself in Arkansas, New York, Boston and Nashville with Nathan Chapman serving as co-producer.  Speak Now sold more than 1 million copies in its debut week, marking the first million-plus launch since Lil’ Wayne’s ‘Tha Carter III’ in June of 2008, according to Billboard.  According to Entertainment Weekly, Swift also brought country music its first million-plus sales week since November 1998, when Garth Brooks took ‘Double Live’ platinum within its first seven days of release.  She is a true gem in the Country music genre.

Taylor Swift began her career in 2006 with her debut single “Tim McGraw”.  She quickly followed that up with her self-titled debut album.  This album was hugely successful and was certified multi-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.  As a result,  she was nominated for Best New Artist award ad the 50th Grammy Award.  Two years later, she followed up her huge debut album with her next album named Fearless.  At the 52nd Grammy Awards, she won herself four more Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.  Fearless topped the Billboard 200 in 11 non-consecutive weeks;  no album has spent more time at No. 1 since 2000.  Taylor was named Artist of the Year by Billboard Magazine in 2009, and is extremely popular in both the Country and Pop categories.  Her sweet nature and immense talent is appealing to people of many backgrounds.

2011 Houston Live-Stock Show and Rodeo

When one thinks about Live-Stock and Rodeo shows, images of cowboys and bull riding come to mind.  But the Houston Live-Stock and Rodeo (HoustonRodeo) is so much more.  The show kicks off in 2011 on March 1 and goes through the 20th.    The 20 day long event  is kicked off by the Downtown Rodeo Roundup, the Downtown Rodeo parade and the ConocoPhillips Rodeo Run and the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. The Houston Rodeo is a spectacle of  livestock judging, music, a carnival, pig racing, barbecue and the Rodeo Uncorked! International Wine Competition, shopping, sales and livestock auctions. It also includes the most profitable regular-season Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) rodeo event.  Since 1966, Rodeohouston has been held at Reliant Astrodome, previously known as just the Astrodome in Houston.

The musical line-up for the Hoston Rodeo is down-right impressive.  Promoting their 4th album, the Incredible Machine, Sugarland is playing on March 3rd.  After signing with Hollywood Records in 2008,  Disney’s Selena Gomez sings on March 6th.  Country Billboard chart blazers, Zac Brown Band, plays on the 17th.  Rounding up the bunch, the incredibly talented and  2008’s CMA and ACM Male Vocalist of the Year winner, Mr. Brad Paisley graces the stage on the 19th.  Some of the other artists that have played in the past include huge names such as Elvis Presley, Reba McEntire, Garth Brooks the Lynyrd Skynrd.

Not to be outshown, the Rodeo Event is equally as exciting.  Each year, the payouts get larger and larger.   Ranked the world’s largest rodeo, the Houston Rodeo only invites the absolutely the most top ranked cowboys and girls.   In 2007, RodeoHouston introduced the game-changing Super Series format, which is a tournament style event that includes five series events and each series consists of three consecutive events.  The top four contestants from each series, based on total money earned, for a total of 20 contestants, will advance to the Super Series Semifinals which includes another three events.  The events go in the following order: First: Tie-Down Roping Second: Bareback Third: Team Roping Fourth: Saddle Bronc Fifth: Steer Wrestling Sixth: Bull Riding Seventh: Barrel Racing   One fun fact about the 2010 Rodeo was that during the regular rounds there were 378 8-second rides on the back of bucking bulls and horses.  The Rodeo purse increased to $1.2 million in 2007 and in 2010 the purse has increased to more than $1.5 million.

If last year is indication, the 2011 Rodeo Houston is going to be massive.   2.2 million people attended last year and shattered the previous years attendance.  The 2010 event also required more than 22,000 volunteers. In 2007, the Rodeo was deemed “the year of the volunteer.”

Alternative Music Headlines Holiday Rock Shows

There’s something about the holiday season and big rock shows.  Numerous big radio stations throughout the country are pumping their massive line-ups.  Some line-ups are down right impressive.  Such is the case with line-up from KROQ based out of Los Angeles.

The 21st Annual KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmasshow at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA has two nights of bands that practically make me weak in the knees.  It’s like an alt-rock lovers dream-come-true.

The line-up for the first night on Sunday, December 12th includes:

The Smashing Pumpkins
Social Distortion
My Chemical Romance
Bad Religion
Jimmy Eat World
Cake
A Day to Remember
The Dirty Heads
Anberlin
Switchfoot

The second night on December 13th is no less impressive with:

Phoenix
Vampire Weekend
Brandon Flowers
The Black Keys
The Temper Trap
Neon Trees
Florence & the Machine
Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros
Broken Bells
Another exciting Radio Station hosted show line-up is from Chicago.  Q101 hosts its 15th annual Twisted Christmas shows at the House of Blues.  It’s 5 nights of 5 different bands starting on Saturday, December 11th,  featuring Alterbridge, Sick Puppies, Five Finger Death Punch, HellYeah, Chevelle, Cake and My Chemical Romance.
102.1 The Edge in Dallas, Texas is hosting How the Edge Stole Christmas on December 29th at the Verizon Theatre featuring the Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Eat World, Cage the Elephant and Civil Twilight. Swoon.
If you’re looking for something out on the East coast, 101.9 RXP is hosting Yule Rock at the Roseland Ballroom on many nights in December, featuring Broken Bells, My Chemical Romance, Cake, Florence and the Machine and Weezer.
So, North, South, East or West, there are HUGE Holiday rock shows going on that are garnering huge attention and even huger line-ups.  These are big name bands, or Huge name bands, rather.  I know I’m excited about them, and that can only mean that many, many others are as well.
