Top Weekend Events August 5 – 7

Wow, can you believe it’s August already??  What happened to July?

As people soak up the last month of summer, fans are still coming out for all the hot concerts and sporting events.

Phish, once again, holds the top position.  Phish like Dave Matthews Band are pretty much the epitome of summer tour bands.  They are to be expected.

According to Redbook Magazine, Taylor Swift was the top concert people wanted to see this summer.  Her concert sales, even on the secondary ticket marketplace certainly correlate with this.

The Vans Warped Tour is on the list again for their Denver tour dates.  Some of the notable bands playing at Invesco Field include A Day to Remember, Against Me!, Attack Attack!, Gym Class Heros, Less Than Jake, Relient K, The Devil Wears Prada, The Expendables and We Came As Romans.

Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park is another big draw this weekend.  The top headliners for this weekend’s tour include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Other tops acts playing in Perry Farrell’s 20th anniversary vision include My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, The Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Beirut, Explosions in the Sky, Death from Above 1979, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Flogging Molly, Atmosphere, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, OK GO, Local Natives, The Kills, White Lies, Portugal. The Man, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding, Delta Spirit, Beats Antique, The Mountain Goats, Sleigh Bells, Manchester Orchestra, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Drums, Black Lips, Fitz & The Tantrums, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, City and Colour, Cults, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses and more.  Chicago is the place to be this weekend for music lovers.

The Gipsy Kings music has been described as “Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk.”  The band started in Southern France in the 1970’s and have been rising in popularity ever since.

Once again, the European soccer teams have shown up again on the top weekend list.    Like Manchester United and Real Madrid earlier this summer, expect  FC Barcelona to show the American team who the real soccer champs are.  Fans are still very excited to have these matches on their home turf and are wanting to see them live.

Lollapalooza 2011 – 20th Anniversary

One of the greatest things about summer in the past decade or so has been the great summer festivals.   Lollapalooza is one in particular always stands out for it’s amazing line-up and fantastic backdrop.  Not many large cities have the capabilities to host large scale musical events.  Thankfully, Chicago can in Grant Park with the skyline at one background and Lake Michigan as the other.  The festival is scheduled to keep Lollapalooza in Chicago until 2010.

Between August 3 – 6, Chicago will once again host some of the biggest acts around, as it has since 1995.  Lollapalooza originally started in 1991, and had changed and morphed into a single city, multi-day, musical extravaganza.  Originally conceived by Jane’s Addictions Perry Farrell, this year is the 20th anniversary of the legendary festival.  Lollapalooza has featured a wide range of popular bands and launched the popularity of many including: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Primus, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, Soundgarden, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Alice in Chains, Tool, Hole, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Strokes, Lady GaGa and the Starlight Revue, and Green Day.

The top headliners for 2011 include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Also scheduled to perform at Lollapallooza 2011 are My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr.

Electronic and DJ acts appearing on the Perry’s stage include Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Kid Cudi, The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77, Afrojack, Modselektor, Skrillex, PerryEtty vs Chris Cox, Chuckie, The Glitch Mob, Busy P, Joachim Garraud and more.

So, there is certainly something for everyone!

If you don’t feel like going to a crowded outdoor festival, festival organizers have booked nearly 30 club concerts throughout the Windy City.  Local club owners are very thankful for official performances sanctioned by Lollapalooza as they funnel some vital summer business off-site to local clubs.  Some of the bigger after hours shows include the Cold War Kids at the Metro, Death from Above 1979, Afrojack and the Arctic Monkeys.

The first weekend in August in Chicago should be an excellent and hectic time for those that love music.

Foo Fighters on Tour!

Dave GrohlDid you hear the news?  Foo Fighters are back touring.  Woo hoo!

But first, an aside on how much I adore Dave Grohl.  The front man had decidedly turned down every opportunity to appear on the Fox hit show “Glee” and he is A-OK with that.  He’s upset with “Glee” creator Ryan Murphy for being presumptuous that all musicians want to be featured on the show.

Grohl told Hollywood Reporter, “”You shouldn’t have to do [expletive deleted] ‘Glee.’ And then the guy who created ‘Glee’ is so offended that we’re not, like, begging to be on his [expletive deleted] show. … I watched 10 minutes [of it]. It’s not my thing.

“Slash was the first one. [Murphy] wanted to do Guns N’ Roses, and Slash is like, ‘I hate [expletive deleted] musicals. It’s worse than “Grease.”‘ Then [Murphy’s] like, ‘Well, of course he’d say that. He’s a washed-up ol’ rock star. That’s what they [expletive deleted] do.'”

“And then Kings of Leon say, ‘No, we don’t want to be on your show.’ And then he’s like, ‘Snotty little [expletive deleted] …’ And it’s just like, ‘Dude, maybe not everyone loves “Glee.” Me included.'”

::swoon::

At any rate, back to the topic at hand.  The Foo Fights are gearing up for a late spring tour in the US with featured acts from Motorhead and Biffy Clyro.  Their opening show will be at the BOK Center in Tulsa, K on May 17th.  This is their first major tour since its 2007-08 international “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace” tour.
