Top Events of 2012

Top Events of 2012Happy new year!! It’s that time of year where we reflect upon the past year and start looking toward the future.  Confucius once said, “Study the past if you wish to define the future….”.  With that in mind we will look at some of the top ticketed events in 2012 and analyze what it means for 2013.  If 2013 is anything like 2012 be sure to start marketing top pop and country performers and be on the look out for growing segments of the like electronic/techno music and international soccer.  Also don’t forget about popular, yet under-marketed sports like NASCAR.

Top Events of 2012

1.  One Direction

There is no denying the fact that One Direction dominated the event ticket market in 2012.  In 2013 expect that trend to continue as their 2013 tour is sold out across the world.  That means that fans will be looking to the secondary ticket market to secure tickets to their concerts.  Although selling One Direction tickets is extremely competitive, you can make inroads by focusing on niche tickets (e.g. front row, meet and greet, VIP, etc.).

2.  International Soccer

We had to lump a few events here to have these international soccer matches come in at number 2 but there is no denying that soccer is growing as a sport in the U.S.  2012 saw a lot of matches between some of the most popular soccer clubs in the world and several MLS teams.  In 2013 keep your eye out for these international friendlies featuring teams like FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Liverpool, as well as the US, Mexico, and Canadian National Teams.

3. Electronic Music

Another fast growing segment of the event ticket industry is electronic or techno music.  It was a really good year for artists such as Skrillex, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Amon Tobin, Avicii, Steve Aoki, Girl Talk, Bassnectar, DJ Tiesto and Pretty Lights.  Look out for performances by any of these artists in 2013 including some of the popular electronic music festivals.

4. Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson’s 2012 Stronger Tour was a smashing success.  While Kelly has not announced any major tour plans for 2013 she will be playing with Jason Aldean at his special Wrigley Field concert.  If Ms. Clarkson’s popularity has taught us anything it’s that performers who can bridge genres (country and pop in particular) seem to do extremely well.  As such we expect Taylor Swift to have a huge 2013.

5.  Jason Aldean

Jason Aldean is one of the hottest country music performers around right now.  He had a fantastic 2012 that began with the tail leg of his 2012 My Kinda Party Tour and ended with the announcement of his 2013 Night Train Tour.  2013 should be another big year for Mr. Aldean as his solo stadium tours including a show at Fenway Park have already sold out.

6. NASCAR

It’s no secret that NASCAR is one of the most popular sports in the US.  However, most event ticket marketers ignore that sport for some reason.  The sport should continue to grow in 2013- especially the Sprint Cup Series.  Some of the more popular races include the Daytona 500, Food City 500, Samsung 500, Sprint Showdown and All-Star Race XXVIII, Coca-Cola 600, Bank of America 500, Brickyard 400 and the AAA Texas 500.

7.  Taylor Swift

What is remarkable about Taylor Swift’s appearance at #7 is that she was only relevant for the last few months of the year following the announcement of her 2013 Red Tour.  Taylor Swift’s popularity across multiple genres and age groups gives her a shot at challenging One Direction for the top spot in 2013.

8.  Eric Chruch

Country music’s Eric Church saw his star climb to new heights in 2012 with his solo Blood, Sweat and Beers Tour. 2013 should be just as good as Eric Church will continue his solo tour through february before joining Kenny Chesney on his No Shoes Nation Tour.  Country music appears to be here to stay so be sure to be on the lookout for the next big thing.

9.  Notre Dame Football

While college football is always a steady performer, usually a team comes from no where to capture the attention of the nation.  This year it was Notre Dame who came out of nowhere to become the #1 team in the Nation and earn a trip to the BCS Championship game.  For 2013 keep an eye out for Texas A&M as freshman Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “Football” Manziel will be getting them lots of national attention.

10.  Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber coming in at #10 is a bit of a surprise.  While just making the top ten is an achievement, many expected the Biebs to performer better.   It just goes to show you how quickly a pop-star can fade and be replaced- especially the young ones.  A lesson for 2013…jump on the next teen pop sensation early!

Lollapalooza 2011 – 20th Anniversary

One of the greatest things about summer in the past decade or so has been the great summer festivals.   Lollapalooza is one in particular always stands out for it’s amazing line-up and fantastic backdrop.  Not many large cities have the capabilities to host large scale musical events.  Thankfully, Chicago can in Grant Park with the skyline at one background and Lake Michigan as the other.  The festival is scheduled to keep Lollapalooza in Chicago until 2010.

Between August 3 – 6, Chicago will once again host some of the biggest acts around, as it has since 1995.  Lollapalooza originally started in 1991, and had changed and morphed into a single city, multi-day, musical extravaganza.  Originally conceived by Jane’s Addictions Perry Farrell, this year is the 20th anniversary of the legendary festival.  Lollapalooza has featured a wide range of popular bands and launched the popularity of many including: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Primus, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, Soundgarden, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Alice in Chains, Tool, Hole, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Strokes, Lady GaGa and the Starlight Revue, and Green Day.

The top headliners for 2011 include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Also scheduled to perform at Lollapallooza 2011 are My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, The Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Beirut, Explosions in the Sky, Death from Above 1979, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Flogging Molly, Atmosphere, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, OK GO, Local Natives, The Kills, White Lies, Portugal. The Man, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding, Delta Spirit, Beats Antique, The Mountain Goats, Sleigh Bells, Manchester Orchestra, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Drums, Black Lips, Fitz & The Tantrums, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, City and Colour, Cults, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses and more.

Electronic and DJ acts appearing on the Perry’s stage include Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Kid Cudi, The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77, Afrojack, Modselektor, Skrillex, PerryEtty vs Chris Cox, Chuckie, The Glitch Mob, Busy P, Joachim Garraud and more.

So, there is certainly something for everyone!

If you don’t feel like going to a crowded outdoor festival, festival organizers have booked nearly 30 club concerts throughout the Windy City.  Local club owners are very thankful for official performances sanctioned by Lollapalooza as they funnel some vital summer business off-site to local clubs.  Some of the bigger after hours shows include the Cold War Kids at the Metro, Death from Above 1979, Afrojack and the Arctic Monkeys.

The first weekend in August in Chicago should be an excellent and hectic time for those that love music.

Milwaukee Summerfest Heats up June 29th – July9th

Summerfest11 days, 11 stages over 700 bands.  That is just a brief summary of the Milwaukee Summerfest, the “Big Gig”. Every summer, usually around July 4th, droves of fans travel to Henry Maier Festival Park on Lake Michigan in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to take part in the annual “World’s Largest Music Festival” as dubbed by Guinness World Records in 1999.  Summerfest usually has crowds of about 800,000 – 1,000,000 people over the 11 days to see amazing, headlining acts.  This has been an annual tradition since 1968.  The line-up is a who’s who of popular and familiar bands.  The bands range from Pop to Country to Hip Hop to Rap and everything in between.  There is absolutely something at Summerfest for everyone. What’s even better is that shows are “free” with purchase of admission of $8 – 15.  The headlining acts at the Marcus Amphitheatre are an additional cost however. There are also comedy shows and extreme sports exhibitions.  All in all, it’s a pretty outstanding deal.  If you’ve never heard, for been to Summerfest for that matter, you really should.

This year the opening headliner is Peter Gabriel and the New Blood Orchestra.

The exceptionally remarkable line-up is as follows, but please keep in mind that this is a very small sampling of the bands performing at the event.  The headlining act of the day is bolded.

Top Weekend Events March 11 – 13

PBRWelcome to your Wednesday!

It certainly is an odd mix of things that are topping the charts this week, huh.  There’s everything from Bull Riding to Disney to Spring Training to Comedy and everything in between.

The Professional Bull Riders show up on the list for their Hampton Invitational where the riders seek valuable qualifying points for the 2011 Professional Bull Riders Tour Finals. The Hampton Invitational is part of the PBR’s Touring Pro Series. Money earned by the riders at PBR Hampton Invitational counts toward the PBR qualifier standings that determine which cowboys will compete at the 2011 Professional Bull Riders Tour Finals in Las Vegas NV.  Get all that?

As far as sports go, obviously March Madness kicks off this week with the regional tournaments including the Big Ten which appears on our list below and the Big East which has HUGE expectations for their outcomes.  Ohio State University and Pittsburgh are expected to come out on top of those tournaments.  The Yankees are the first official MLB baseball team to make the list in 2011.  I was betting it was going to be the Red Sox.  Oh well.

On the music scene, Flogging Molly is not of any surprise to me.  St. Patty’s day is almost upon us and FM’s Irish/Celtic rock sound is immensely popular this time of year.  Rascal Flatts is also showing up on the list with their big tour Nothing Like This.   Their shows are heavy on special effects, including videos, pyrotechnics and laser lights.  Kid Rock makes another appearance on the list.  And Girl Talk, also known as Gregg Michael Gillis, is an American musician that specializes in mashups and digital sampling.  The Houston Rodeo is also going on this weekend.  Other upcoming acts at the HR include: Lady Antebellum, Kid Rock (again!), KISS, Miranda Lambert, Zac Brown Band, Brad Paisley and Jason Aldean.  Tracy Morgan should not go unmentioned, given his popularity with Saturday Night Live (SNL) and 30 Rock.  This is one funny man!
