Top Weekend Events August 19-21

Hello Wednesday!

First and foremost, I’d like to extend my condolences to the families affected by the collapsed stage at the Sugarland show at the Indiana State Fair.  You’re in our thoughts!

Not to be totally glossed over, but there do seem to be a few other state fair concerts on the list for this week.  While last week’s concert was surely a tragedy, it was a sad, but extremely rare occurrence.  Train and Lady Antebellum will both be performing at the Iowa and Indiana State Fairs respectively.

Other county music stars will be hitting the stage this weekend with huge fan interest.  Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band are high again on the list with their summery sound.  Ms. Taylor Swift is once again on the list as well with her Speak Now tour which continues and will continue to draw a lot of interest.  Rascal Flatts, while always popular, seems to be getting even more popular these days.

Justin Beiber’s better half, Selena Gomez, takes the top spot for the weekend.   Selena Gomez and The Scene (the rest of her band) recently took home accolades from the RIAA for their song “Who Says” which went platinum.  The girl can sing!  Her days on Disney’s the Wizards of Wavery Place, dating the Bieb as well as her throngs of pre-tween fans can’t hurt either.

Old rivals the Chicago Cubs vs. the St. Louis Cardinals face off again this weekend.  Both teams have die-hard loyal fans, but sadly, the Cardinals have more World Series wins over the Cubbies.

And finally, once again the MLS has made another appearance on the top weekend events list.  The Houston Dynamo Soccer team will take on the Real Salt Lake.  Keep your eye out for MLS games!

John Mellencamp tour announcement!

John Mellencamp recently announced his No Better Than This Tour (Fall 2011 Leg).  Tickets will go on sale Friday, August 5 at 10 AM Local.  The seventeen-date tour kicks off October 25 at Boston’s Citi Performing Arts Center Wang Theater and will conclude in Savannah, GA, at the Johnny Mercer Theater on November 11.

Mellencamp, a Southern Indiana native, has sold over 40 million albums worldwide and has accrued 22 top 40 hits in the US.  His latest album which the tour is named after, No Better Than This, was released on August 17th, 2010 and has received much critical acclaim.

He is also a founding member of Farm Aid, an organization that started in 1985 with a concert in Champaign, IL to raise awareness about the loss of family farms  and to raise money to keep these family farms.  To date, Farm Aid has raised over $39 million.  This year’s Farm Aid will take place on August 13th at Livestrong Sporting Park in Kansas City, KS.

Of noted interest, is the fact that this latest string of No Better Than This Tour dates closes with a performance at Clowes Memorial Hall in Indianapolis (near Mellencamp’s hometown of Bloomington), the location of one of the tour’s earliest stops last year. Top Weekend Events July 29 – 31st

Hello Wednesday!

First and foremost, did you notice all the country music events on this list?  Holy moly!  8/10 events on the list are for country, every kind of country music too.  Old country, new country, pop country, folk country, it’s all there!  Zac Brown Band makes another appearance on the list with a short absence.  ZBB will be performing at the Cheyenne Frontier Days, an annual event held since 1897.  CFD claims to be one of the largest outdoor rodeo and western celebrations in the world.  The infamous Dolly Parton makes her first appearance on the top weekend events list.  She is one of the most successful country artists, earning her the title of “The Queen of Country Music.”  She has been in a top-five country hit in each of the last five decades and alongside with Reba McEntire, one of the only two country artists has had No.1 singles in each of four consecutive decades.    These are two exceptionally talented ladies!

Mr. Tim McGraw shows up twice on this list.  He’s right up there with the ladies previously mentioned for his legacy.  He has had 11 consecutive albums to debut at the top position on the Billboard album charts and twenty one singles hit the top spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.  Mr. McGraw is also a very talented actor, having been in amazing movies like The Blind Side and Country Strong.

Of course, Sir Paul McCartney takes the top spot this weekend, just as I predicted last Wednesday.  This weekend he’s playing at the Cubs home turf of Wrigley Field.
