Top Weekend Events Septemeber 23 – 25

Hooray Wednesday!

I’m going to go ahead and call it that the summer concert season is officially dead.  In its place, officially, is College Football!

There are certainly some exciting games this weekend!  The top game everyone seems to want to attend is the West Virginia vs. Louisiana State game.  These two teams are competitively matched.  LSU has an absolute top notch defense, but the Mountaineer’s quarterback, Geno Smith, is a formidable opponent.

The Fight Irish vs. Panthers game is surely another tough call on who would win.  Pitt’s offense and defense have a good balance, but is it enough to show up Notre Dame?

Colorado is expected to sweep Ohio State, particularly with their star QB, Tyler Hansen, and RB Rodney Stewart.

Boise State is certainly another team to keep a keen eye on.  Since the Broncos near slaughter of the Georgia Bulldogs at the start of the season, they’re on a fast track in the national title race.   QB, Kellen Moore, is one of the best and most effectual quarterbacks currently playing in the NCAA and is expected to shatter multiple records, including most touchdowns and most wins.

For your non-football related activities this week, the hot one is definitely the 3-day i Heart Radio Festival in Las Vegas.  The festival will feature top acts like LADY GAGA ,  JAY-Z , COLDPLAY , STEVEN TYLER, THE BLACK EYED PEAS,  KENNY CHESNEY, ALICIA KEY,  JENNIFER LOPEZ, CARRIE UNDERWOOD, JANE’S ADDICTION, NICKI MINAJ , DAVID GUETTA, RASCAL FLATTS, BRUNO MARS, KELLY CLARKSON, SUBLIME WITH ROME With special guest performances by USHER, STING and JEFF BECK.  It is one FULL line-up!!

Jeff Dunham is in the same field as Terry Fator.  They are both master ventriloquistsTime Magazine wrote about his puppet characters, “All of them are politically incorrect, gratuitously insulting and ill tempered.”

Lollapalooza 2011 – 20th Anniversary

One of the greatest things about summer in the past decade or so has been the great summer festivals.   Lollapalooza is one in particular always stands out for it’s amazing line-up and fantastic backdrop.  Not many large cities have the capabilities to host large scale musical events.  Thankfully, Chicago can in Grant Park with the skyline at one background and Lake Michigan as the other.  The festival is scheduled to keep Lollapalooza in Chicago until 2010.

Between August 3 – 6, Chicago will once again host some of the biggest acts around, as it has since 1995.  Lollapalooza originally started in 1991, and had changed and morphed into a single city, multi-day, musical extravaganza.  Originally conceived by Jane’s Addictions Perry Farrell, this year is the 20th anniversary of the legendary festival.  Lollapalooza has featured a wide range of popular bands and launched the popularity of many including: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Pearl Jam, The Cure, Primus, The Killers, Rage Against the Machine, Arcade Fire, Nine Inch Nails, Jane’s Addiction, Soundgarden, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Alice in Chains, Tool, Hole, 30 Seconds to Mars, The Strokes, Lady GaGa and the Starlight Revue, and Green Day.

The top headliners for 2011 include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Also scheduled to perform at Lollapallooza 2011 are My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, The Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Beirut, Explosions in the Sky, Death from Above 1979, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Flogging Molly, Atmosphere, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, OK GO, Local Natives, The Kills, White Lies, Portugal. The Man, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding, Delta Spirit, Beats Antique, The Mountain Goats, Sleigh Bells, Manchester Orchestra, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Drums, Black Lips, Fitz & The Tantrums, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, City and Colour, Cults, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses and more.

Electronic and DJ acts appearing on the Perry’s stage include Girl Talk, Pretty Lights, Kid Cudi, The Bloody Beetroots Death Crew 77, Afrojack, Modselektor, Skrillex, PerryEtty vs Chris Cox, Chuckie, The Glitch Mob, Busy P, Joachim Garraud and more.

So, there is certainly something for everyone!

If you don’t feel like going to a crowded outdoor festival, festival organizers have booked nearly 30 club concerts throughout the Windy City.  Local club owners are very thankful for official performances sanctioned by Lollapalooza as they funnel some vital summer business off-site to local clubs.  Some of the bigger after hours shows include the Cold War Kids at the Metro, Death from Above 1979, Afrojack and the Arctic Monkeys.

The first weekend in August in Chicago should be an excellent and hectic time for those that love music.
