Spring is Here… Opening Day 2014

2014 MLB Opening DayAlthough the first day of Spring was officially on March 20th, we think Spring really starts the same day as the Major League Baseball season- opening day.  With opening day happening tomorrow (Monday March 31st), we thought it would be fitting to make our predictions for the upcoming season.  As a Chicago Cubs fan, spring is the time for optimism.  A time where every team still has a chance to reach the post season no matter how big or how small the payroll.  While, over the last several years, parity has increased across the MLB landscape – most experts still pick the big spending teams like the New York Yankees or the Los Angeles Dodgers.  The bigger and more interesting question is who will become this year’s Pittsburgh Pirates?  With that in mind, here are my picks for the 2014 MLB Season.

National League

NL East – Washington Nationals:  The Nationals were a big disappointment last year but they will be ready to rebound.  Bryce Harper will be ready to compete for a MVP crown this year.

NL Central – St. Louis Cardinals:  Hard to pick against St. Louis here… They made it all the way to the World Series last season only to lose to the Braves.  This Cardinals team is loaded with young talent that should only be better this year.  As much as I hate to admit it, unless they implode, expect them to cruise to another NL Central Title.

NL West –  Los Angeles Dodgers:  Again not a surprising pick here but the L.A. Dodgers are absolutely loaded with talent.  The got off to a slow start last season only to come on strong at the end – that could happen again this year but I just can’t see the Giants or Diamondbacks running away with the division early.

NL Wildcard Teams: Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies

American League

AL East – Tampa Bay Rays:  While most are picking the Red Sox or Yankees here, I just can’t pick against a team with an abundance of young talent and the best manager in the game (Joe Maddon).  Watch out for Desmond Jennings and Chris Archer this year!

AL Central – Kansas City Royals: Ok, here is my out-on-a-limb pick.  Every year I think the KC Royals will be much better than they turn out to be.  Maybe it is my inner Cub fan coming out but I really think this will be the year the Royals put it all together.  Watch out for Yordano Ventura!

AL West – Oakland A’s:  On paper the A’s look like nothing all that special.  However, they never look all that special on paper but Billy Beane always seems to find a way to keep the Athletics competitive.  With not a whole lot of dominant teams in the AL West you have to go with the team that will likely be the most consistent.

AL Wildcard Teams:  Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers

Final 4 and MLB Opening Day Draws Heavy Interest – Tickifieds Top 10

2013-final-four-logoIt should come as no surprise that this week we once again find the NCAA Tournament atop our Top 10 list of events.  The NCAA Tournament, and in particular the Final Four, is one of the most watched events in the country.  It’s been a pretty incredible tournament so far with plenty of upsets including the #9 seeded Wichita State Shockers advancing along with #4 seeds Michigan and Syracuse and the #1 overall seeded Louisville Cardinals.  The Georgia Dome will surely be rocking when the Final Four begins on Satruday (4/6/2013).

Other than the impressive numbers from the NCAA Tournament, notable inclusions on this week’s list are the multiple MLB teams.  With the 2013 MLB opening day today, interest in baseball tickets has certainly spiked.  Of the top 10 events this week, 5 are from the world of baseball.

Top Events Week 12 (3/25/2013 to 4/1/2013)

1.  NCAA Tournament Final Four

The NCAA Tournament Final Four field is set with top seeded Louisville joined by Wichita State Shockers (#9), Michigan Wolverines (#4)  and Syracuse Orange (#4).  Significant traffic is flowing in from fans looking for tickets to the semi-finals and championship game.  As such, full session passes are a popular item.

2.  One Direction

One Direction keeps chugging along as a major force in the event ticket industry. As soon as the NCAA Tournament is over, expect 1D to resume their reign as the top event at Tickifieds.com

3.  Chicago Cubs

The baseball season is underway and despite the fact that the Cubs are coming off a 100 loss season, fans are still looking to enjoy summertime fun at the “Friendly Confines” of Wrigley Field.

4.  John Mayer

John Mayer will be spending the summer alongside former American Idol winner Philip Phillips.  Ticket demand has been surprisingly strong especially for shows in Atlanta (Lakewood Amphitheater), Colorado (Red Rocks Amphitheater) and Milwaukee (SummerFest).

5.  New York Yankees

It could be a looooong year for Yankees fans as age and injuries are really starting to catch up to them.  If the Yankees can stay in the race for the AL East title at least fans know that ownership will continue to open up their wallets!

6.  Washington Nationals

After a disappointing conclusion to the 2012 season, Nationals fans are looking forward to a full year with pitching phenom Stephen Strasburg and young slugger Bryce Harper.  The future is very bright for this team!

7.  Pitbull and Kesha

Hip hop mogul Pitbull is teaming up with ke$ha on their 2013 Tour.  This party duo is sure to draw strong interest from their legions of dedicated fans- especially for those hard to get Meet and Greet Passes.  Popular shows thus far are Atlanta (Lakewood Amphitheater), Holmdel (PNC Bank Arts Center) and, surprisingly, Albuquerque (Hard Rock Pavilion).

8.  Kansas City Royals

A bit of surprise here but fans are excited about the KC Royals chances this year. While they may not have the talent of the Detroit Tigers, they Royals have quietly assembled themselves a nice team that should be in contention for at least a wildcard spot.

9.  Boston Red Sox

Much like the Yankees and Cubs,  Boston Red Sox fans aren’t overly optimistic about their chances this year but that doesn’t seem to stop them from going to games.

10.  Big Time Rush

Nickelodeon stars Big Time Rush (aka BTR) will be heading out on tour this summer with emerging pop star Victoria Justice on the 2013 “Summer Break Tour.”  The tour announcement came just a few short days ago so expect these guys to creep up the ranking next week.

This top 10 list is compiled from internal search data from Tickifieds.com and organic traffic from search engines.  Search terms are ranked by using a combination of both sources of search data.

Top Weekend Events – July 1st – 4th

Ultimate Fighting ChampionshipWell, it’s Wednesday again.  This is the big 4th of July weekend and people for sure want to get out and see some baseball!  They have a number of excellent games to go see.

While baseball games, particularly on the 4th, are reigning supreme on the list, some other “manly” events are of note.  Taking top placement of events going on this weekend is the mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Vegas.  Originally, the event was set to be a rematch between B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch, but, given the nature of the sport, both competitors had to bow out due to injuries.    This started a whole ripple of injuries replacements from the event, including Evan Dunham, Jason Miller, and Cub Swanson.  The main event, Bantamweight Championship is between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.  UFC 132 will broadcast it’s two preliminary fights live on Spike TV and the remaining fights will be streamed on Facebook.  How’s that for using social media?

The Coke Zero 400 Race is a 160 lap, 400 mile NASCAR Sprint Series stock car race at the Daytona International Speedway.  This particular race has been around since 1959 and usually held around 4th of July, and has held other names such as the Firecracker 250, Firecracker 400, Pepsi Firecracker 400 and Pepsi 400.  This year’s event will again be televised on TNT.

As for your top weekend concerts, the men of country seem to hold their fan’s attention.  Toby Keith will be playing at the Henry Maier Festival Park at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI.  Mr. Keith with special guest Eric Church are the headliners for the day, but other notable (free with admission!) acts include; Girl Talk, Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos, Anberlin, Third Eye Blind, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus an Taj Mahal.  Kenny Chesney is the other man of the weekend with his show in Pittsburgh.  There’s something about country music, fireworks, a cold beer and celebrating the 4th, isn’t there?

So, all in all, people are looking for good old fashioned events that remind folks about our American pastimes; music, baseball and having a good time.

Top Weekend Events – April 22 -24

Thank goodness it’s Wednesday.  I don’t know about you, but this week has felt really long already.  The Midwest has been under a thick blanket of rain, sleet and even a little snow for far too many days in a row now.  Yuck.

Anyhoo, looking at this list, a theme jumps out.  While Country Music reigned supreme last week, Pop Music holds the title for this weekend.  It’s not all the bubblegum pop either, but a nice mixture of contemporary and urban pop as well.

Harry Connick Jr., finally gets a deserving place on the list.  He has sold over 25 million albums worldwide and is ranked among the top 60 best-selling male artists in America by the Recording Industry Association of America.  Not to mention that he’s cute as a bug and is one funny man.  He puts on quite the show.

Then there’s Jimmy Buffet, the original Parrothead.  He has created the music genre that is now known as “Island Escapism.”   His songs “Cheeseburger in Paradise” and “Margaritaville” definitely encapsulate this along with his Coral Reefer Band.  I oftentimes feel like the Zac Brown Band has a lot of the same characteristics as Buffet.

Now for your urban pop.  Does the name Diddy Dirty Money ring any bells?  Well, it is the one and only Sean “Puffy”” Diddy” Combs.  Mr. Combs is an UBER successful businessman with a finger in nearly every pie not only including music, but fashion (Sean Jean), acting (Get Him to the Greek) and fragrance (I am King).  He is one busy man.  My one question that I have for you, Mr. Diddy, why do they call it a Jeffrey?

Kesha and her Animal and Cannibal tour and Lady Gaga and her Born this Way Tour make another appearance on the list again this week.  Continue to expect them to remain strong in their appeal through the rest of their tours.  Fans want to see these two acts live.

As for your sporting events exciting fans this week, the NBA Playoffs are heating up and getting electrifying.   What more can I say about the Bull’s MVP, Derrick Rose, other than he is phenomenal.  Keep an eye on this player, he’s going places.  The best part about Rose is that he is a humble man.  It’s really fantastic to see.

Wayne Brady is an exceptionally talented, Emmy Award Winining actor, singer, comedian and televison personality.  He has had many successful shows on TV including “Whose Line is It Anyway?”, “The Wayne Brady Show”, “Don’t Forget the Lyrics” and he is currently hosting the revival of “Let’s Make a Deal.”  Brady is very likable and very funny.

  1. Jimmy Buffet, Cruzan Amphitheatre, West Palm Beach, FL – Saturday, April 23
  2. Harry Connick Jr., MGM Grand,  Mashantucket,  CT- Friday, April 22
  3. Diddy Dirty Money, House of Blues, Atlantic City, NJ – Saturday, April 23
