NCAA Tournament overtakes One Direction – Tickifieds Top 10

2013-NCAA-Tournament-logoAfter nearly a full year dominating the Tickifieds Top 10, someone finally took down the king One Direction.  This week, the NCAA Tournament upset the boy wonder band 1D to claim the top spot in this weeks Top 10 list.  To celebrate this glorious occasion, we decided to do a special two part blog post.  Not only will we detail the top overall events this week, we will also break down the Top 10 NCAA Tournament Games that will take place this week.  This includes the opening round “First Four” as well as the 2nd and 3rd round match ups that will take place on March 21st and March 22nd.

Top NCAA Tournament Sessions (Rounds 2 and 3)

1.  Detroit Session 1:  Valpo vs MSU and Memphis vs TBD

I may be a bit biased, but demand for Session 1 of the Detroit NCAA Tournament games has been crazy.  It’s really not that much of a surprise given the fact that Michigan State virtually has a home game but Valparaiso also travels well.  The Crusaders are just a state away and will be looking to pull off another big upset with the Bryce Drew coached team.

2.  Lexington Session 1:  Marquette vs. Davidson & Butler vs. Bucknell

This session is packed with typical underdog schools all with a reasonable chance at making it to the Sweet 16.  Throw in the fact that the Butler Bulldogs are looking strong and Indianapolis is only a few short hours away, and it makes perfect sense that this session comes in at #2.

3.  Kansas City Session 2:  Kansas vs. Western Kentucky & North Carolina vs. Villanova

Again, here we have another top team from a major conference with a relative home game.  KC Session 2 is drawing strong demand from Jayhawk fans.  Having North Carolina doesn’t hurt either!

4.  Dayton Session 2:  Notre Dame vs. Iowa State & Ohio State. vs. Iona

Dayton Ohio is the hub of college basketball right now.  the tournament kicks off the “first four” there today and follows up with a dynamite session that includes in-state team Ohio State and Notre Dame.

5.  Detroit Session 2:  VCU vs. Akron & Michigan vs. South Dakota State

The Tournament selection committee was kind to the Michigan Big 10 schools.  Not only do you have the Michigan Wolverines with a relative home game in Auburn Hills but you also have fan favorite VCU all in the same session.

6.  Philadelphia Session 2:  Georgetown vs. Florida Gulf Coast & San Diego State vs. Oklahoma

This one is a bit of a surprise as the only school within reasonable traveling distance are the Georgetown Hoyas.  Nonetheless, this session is drawing considerable interest…

7.  Salt Lake City Session 1:  Gonzaga vs. Southern & Pittsburgh vs. Wichita State

Not a whole lot to be excited about here outside of #1 seeded Gonzaga.  The Zags are finally starting to get the respect they deserve and were rewarded with a game within a reasonable distance from Spokane.

8.  San Jose Session 2:  UNLV vs. California & Syracuse vs. Montana

Outside of Syracuse, all teams in the San Jose Session 2 are relatively big schools within driving distance to San Jose.  Even more interesting is that each of these games should be really competitive!

9.  Lexington Session 2:  Louisville vs. TBD & Colorado State vs. Missouri

As the #1 overall seed, the Louisvile Cardinals were rewarded with a game in their home state.  Adding further interest to the mix is neighboring Missouri taking on Colorado State.

10.  Austin Session 2:  UCLA vs. Minnesota & Florida vs. Northwestern State

There has not been much interest in the Austin Sessions of the NCAA Tournament and probably for good reason- Not really any local nor very good teams.  However, UCLA and Florida do have strong fan bases that have kept Session 2 on our radar.

Top Overall Events Week 9 (3/4/2013 to 3/11/2013)

  1. NCAA Tournament
  2. One Direction
  3. CONCACAF Gold Cup
  4. Boston Red Sox
  5. Paradiso Festival
  6. Austin Rodeo
  7. Chicago Cubs
  8. New York Yankees
  9. Emblem3
  10. Los Angeles Dodgers

This top 10 list is compiled from internal search data from Tickifieds.com and organic traffic from search engines.  Search terms are ranked by using a combination of both sources of search data.

Top Weekend Events – July 1st – 4th

Ultimate Fighting ChampionshipWell, it’s Wednesday again.  This is the big 4th of July weekend and people for sure want to get out and see some baseball!  They have a number of excellent games to go see.

While baseball games, particularly on the 4th, are reigning supreme on the list, some other “manly” events are of note.  Taking top placement of events going on this weekend is the mixed martial arts event held by the Ultimate Fighting Championship in Vegas.  Originally, the event was set to be a rematch between B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch, but, given the nature of the sport, both competitors had to bow out due to injuries.    This started a whole ripple of injuries replacements from the event, including Evan Dunham, Jason Miller, and Cub Swanson.  The main event, Bantamweight Championship is between Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber.  UFC 132 will broadcast it’s two preliminary fights live on Spike TV and the remaining fights will be streamed on Facebook.  How’s that for using social media?

The Coke Zero 400 Race is a 160 lap, 400 mile NASCAR Sprint Series stock car race at the Daytona International Speedway.  This particular race has been around since 1959 and usually held around 4th of July, and has held other names such as the Firecracker 250, Firecracker 400, Pepsi Firecracker 400 and Pepsi 400.  This year’s event will again be televised on TNT.

As for your top weekend concerts, the men of country seem to hold their fan’s attention.  Toby Keith will be playing at the Henry Maier Festival Park at Summerfest in Milwaukee, WI.  Mr. Keith with special guest Eric Church are the headliners for the day, but other notable (free with admission!) acts include; Girl Talk, Los Lonely Boys, Los Lobos, Anberlin, Third Eye Blind, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus an Taj Mahal.  Kenny Chesney is the other man of the weekend with his show in Pittsburgh.  There’s something about country music, fireworks, a cold beer and celebrating the 4th, isn’t there?

So, all in all, people are looking for good old fashioned events that remind folks about our American pastimes; music, baseball and having a good time.

Top Weekend Events – April 2 -4

Fenway ParkWelcome to Hump Day!!  You’ve made it half way through the week already!  Way to go.

Sorry about missing last week’s post.  I was all screwed up last week.  Friday arrived, and I thought it was Wednesday.  Oops.

At any rate, will you check out this list?!  I think A LOT of people are very excited about the impending baseball season and spring FINALLY arriving.  It’s about dang time too.  Obviously, some of the biggest names on the list include the 2007 World Series champs, the Colorado Rockies, the perennial favorite Red Sox, 2005 runner up champs, the Houston Astros and the neighborly rivals the Giants vs. the Dodgers.  Frankly, I’m exceptionally surprised not to see the Chicago Cubs nor the New York Yankees on this list.  I’m sure their time is coming though.

Obviously and without any surprise, the NCAA Men’s Basketball Final Four Tournament holds down the top spot.  For those whose brackets and pools predicted these final four, they should receive some kind of elaborate prize.  The Final Four is comprised of the Virginia Commonwealth Rams (VCU), Butler Bulldogs, UConn Huskies and the Kentucky Wildcats.  Which unlikely team do you think will take home the championship on April 4th?

The Chicago Bulls also are making an appearance on the list.  Hometown hero, Derrick Rose, is helping lead his team hopefully another championship, along with assistance from Joakim Noah and Carlos Boozer and Coach Tom Thibodeau.

Our firs WWE event shows up on the list with Wrestlemania XXVII (that’s 27 for us regular folk).  Some of the matches of note include The Edge vs. Alberto Del Rio, The Miz (from MTV’s Real World!) and John Cena as well as Triple H taking on The Undertaker.  WWE has a huge following and is not just for 13-year-old boys anymore.
