Top 10 College Football Games 2013 (Week 3)

Another week of college football action is in the books and boy were there some outstanding games that certainly shook up the rankings.  In perhaps the biggest game of the young season, the Michigan Wolverines upset the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 41-30.  The loss for the Irish came largely at the hands on their porous defense that couldn’t seem to stop the Wolverines who racked up 460 yards of total offense in front of 115,000 fans.  The win propelled Michigan all the way up to #11 in the FBS Associated Press Top 25 while the loss knocked Notre Dame all the way down to #21.

MiamiHurricanesNotre Dame was no alone in getting upset this week.  In another high profile game, the Miami Hurricanes took down the rival Florida Gators by a score of 21-16.  The Hurricanes were absolutely dominated by the Gators offense giving up over 200 yards more of total offense.  However, the Gators turned the ball over 5 times, including 4 in the red zone, to essentially hand the game over to the in-state rivals.

This past weekend also saw the unranked BYU Cougars take down the the Texas Longhorns 4-021.  The Longhorns were bounced out of the top 25 after being previously ranked as high as #15.  In addition, the USC Trojans (preisouly ranked #25) lost to the hapless Washington State Cougars and the #5 South Carolina Gamecocks lost to the #11 Georgia Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs moved up to #9 in the nation while South Carolina dropped to #13.

With the recap of week 2 action complete, let’s take a look at the Top 10 college football game for Week 3.

Top 10 College Football Games 2013 (Week 2)

The 2013 college football season certainly started out with a bang last week with some dominant performances and some big upsets.  The biggest upset of the week goes to the Eastern Washington Eagles who bested the #25 ranked Oregon State Beavers 49-46.  It’s one thing for any ranked team to lose to an unranked opponent in the opening week but, what makes matters worse is that Eastern Washington is a lowly FCS team (formerly NCAA Division I-AA).  Not a good week to be a Beaver fan!  The other big upset was #19 Boise State Broncos losing to the Washington Huskies.  While Boise State losing to a PAC-12 team isn’t shocking by any means, getting blown out 38-6 certainly is.

In addition to the upsets noted above, week 1 was also filled with great drama and story lines.  In perhaps the most interesting game Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and the #7 Texas A&M Aggies took on the Rice Owls.  The game itself wouldn’t normally be all that interesting except for the fact that the Aggies star quarterback was suspended for the first half of the game due to some questionable off season behavior that included signing autographs for a shady memorabilia dealer.   Johnny football came in after halftime and did not disappoint.  He threw 3 touchdown passes on 6/8 passing and 94 yards.  If that wasn’t enough to keep the eye balls glued to the field, Manziel mimiced signing an autograph while getting up from a tackle and later was ejected for unsportmanslike conduct for pointing at the scoreboard after a TD pass in the fourth quarter.  Regardless of what you think of Manziel and the Aggies, they will be interesting to watch all season long.

In the Tickifieds Game of the Week, #17 Michigan will take on the #14 Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Big Ten Football Preview 2013

Last year’s Big Ten league was pretty terrible.  Only four teams ranked, and the two that did (Michigan and Nebraska) were ranked 24 and 25, and the second best team, Northwestern, finished 17.  Ouch.  In fact, the Big 10 hasn’t won a national championship since Ohio State in 2002. So, let’s review the teams for the upcoming 2013 season.

1.) Ohio State

Urban Meyer had  an awful year last year with a 12-0 record.  He is not known for keeping his players in line, either at his previous post as Gators head coach and the Aaron Hernandez shenangians or with his current Buckeye players.  He really needs to step up, but with players Braxton Miller as QB and Carlos Hyde as RB, they have a shot at ending the SEC’s reign.

2.) Michigan

The Detroit native, Devon Gardner, will start his junior year season as the starting QB after only playing a little last season, and at WR for parts of his first two years. Brady Hoke has done an excellent job recruiting high quality talent, such as newbie running back Derrick Green, to support his pro-style offense, and the go away from the spread offense of previous coach Rich Rodriguez.  They’re looking good this year!

3.) Northwestern

While the Wildcats were the second best team of the Big 10 last year, they still weren’t particularly noticeable.  They still have the very talented senior running back, Venric Mark and the equally thoughtful coach, Pat Fitzgerald. This year, the Wildcats have a huge advantage as Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State will play on their home grass.

4.) Nebraska

The Huskers have had a rough go of it lately. Every season they have huge expectations, and the last two seasons have been particularly bad, specifically when Wisconsin creamed them 70-31 in the title game.  This year isn’t shaping up too great either with another year of Martinez.

5.) Penn State

Under penalty last year for the Sandusky scandal, The Nittany Lions should do well this year under Bill O’Brien. Unfortunately, they are still ineligible for the postseason for three more years.  The team is made up of high quality tight ends, like Breneman

6.) Michigan State

The Spartans defense looks stellar again this year, as they did last year.  Their offense game, on the other hand, needs a ton of help.  They lost a key player in RB Le’Veon Bell.  Their passing game needs a ton of help too.  On their side is a weak schedule in their favor which might propel them into a quality bowl.

7. )Wisconsin

The new coach, Gary Andersen, hails from Utah State, after previous coach Bret Bielema departed for Fayetteville. The Badgers will continue on with the power running game, but the new OC has big plans to improve the passing game.  The Badgers are blessed with an easy schedule, they don’t play Michigan, Michigan State or Nebraska, so they’ll lack the game play to somehow get into the Rose Bowl for a fourth year.

8.)Indiana

The Hoosiers had the most passing yards per game in the Big Ten last .  Indiana has an abysmal track record, with  having played in one bowl in the last 20 seasons, but this year they have an advantage with  an easier schedule than 2012. Head Coach Kevin Wilson has his choice this year of starting QB with Cameron Coffman, Tre Roberson, and the rising sophomore Nate Sudfeld.

9.)Purdue

The Boilermakers have high hopes with new coach from Kent State, Darrell Hazell.  Hopefully he is able to work some magic on this team, who have only had one double digit win since 1979.  Ouch.  A lot of things are not on Purdue’s side, like a challenging schedule and an inexperienced backfield.

10.) Minnesota

Last year was pretty lackluster for the Gophers with only a 6-7  season with a loss to coach-less Texas Tech in a pre-New Year’s Day bowl. Minnesota takes on terrible opponents in the non-con schedule , so there is a good chance they could be 4-0 heading into conference play.

11.) Iowa

Coach Ferentz is back again and his team is just above .500 since 2005, if the fluke 2009 Orange Bowl season was toss out that is. An unnamed QB starts this year and they have a tough schedule.  The 2013 season is not shaping up well for the Hawkeyes.

12.) Illinois

Senior QB, Nate Scheelhaase is expected to have another stellar season, Heisman-worthy, even.  The team, though, might be a different story.  Scheelhaase, is a run-first, pass-last type of guy.  Good news for Illinois, though, is that they move tot he West division next year.

So there you have it, the good, the bad and the ugly of the 2013 Big Ten Football.

1D Maintains Momentum in 2013 – Tickifieds Top 10

OneDirection-2013-TourHappy New Year!  Although this time of year is typically one of the slowest in the event ticket industry, several events this week are keeping sales going relatively strong.  Top on the list this week are none other than 1 Direction and Taylor Swift.  This battle that surfaced last fall has continued into 2013 and is showing no signs of slowing down.

The first week of 2013 was also good for sports.  The NFL playoffs got underway this past weekend and fans are eager to buy up any tickets floating around in the secondary ticket market.  With college football ending tonight, fans are also interested in college basketball tickets.  High on the list include conference tournaments in addition to the 2013 Final Four.

Last and certainly not least, this week we also find the ever popular Houston Rodeo make the list for the first (but likely not the last) time.  With a powerhouse lineup of some of the most popular country and pop performers, this event will be HUGE.  If you haven’t been on top of this event from a marketing prospective you really need to jump on this now.

Here are the rest of this week’s top 10…

Top Events Week 1, 2013

1.  One Direction

One Direction has picking up right where we left them in 2012… at #1.  These young blokes  are taking the nation by storm and they only seem to be growing in popularity.  Whatever happened to Justin Bieber?

2. Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift continues to attract a lot of attention for her upcoming 2013 Red Tour.  While she hasn’t been able to surpass One Direction this far she has shown that she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

3.  Baltimore Ravens

Ray Lewis recently announced that he is retiring at the end of the season.  That means it might be the last hurrah for the Baltimore Ravens.  This weekend they will head into Denver to face Peyton Manning and the Broncos.

College Football Top 10 Games Week 11 (2012)

alabama-football

Alabama will look to stay unbeaten against the #15 Texas A&M Aggies this week. A win and they are pretty much a lock to make the 2013 BCS Championship game.

After another week of college football, just 4 unbeaten (significant) teams remain.  Alabama, Kansas State, Oregon, and Notre Dame are all still trying to make their case that they deserve a shot at the BCS National Championship game.  The #9 Louisville Cardinals are also undefeated but it is highly unlikely they could significantly move up in the BCS standings with just 1 game against a ranked opponent (Rutger on 11/29).  That means it’s all going to come down to who can run out the table and who can make the best case.  No room for error from here on out.

College Football Top 10 Games Week 11 (2012)

1.  #1 Alabama Crimson Tide vs #15 Texas A&M Aggies

Alabama will have it’s last test of the regular season against the #15 TAMU.  After this game they just have Western Carolina and Auburn before heading on to the SEC Championship game.

2.  TCU Horned Frogs vs #2 Kansas State Wildcats

TCU will get their chance to knock out the #2 team in the nation in Fort Worth.

3.  #7 LSU Tigers vs #21 Mississippi State Bulldogs

This game would likely be the game of the week had LSU not lost to Alabama last week.  With 2 losses, LSU is virtually elimated from BCS contention.  Nonetheless, this should be a great game between 2 ranked teams.

4.  #14 Stanford Cardinal vs #11 Oregon State Beavers

This is a huge game that will have big ramifications for the PAC 12.  Both teams will be looking to keep pace with the Oregon Ducks in the North Division and further solidify their bowl bid.

5. #16 Nebraska Cornhuskers vs Penn State Nittany Lions

Nebraska has a big game this weekend against PSU.  They need to win to remain atop the Big 10 Legends Division Standings and stay in line for a trip to the Rose Bowl.

6.  Michigan Wolverines vs #24 Northwestern Wildcats

These two teams are fighting for position atop the Big 10 Legends division with Nebraska.  To the winner goes a chance at a Rose Bowl bid…..

7.  Boston College Eagles vs #4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Boston College Eagles aren’t much this season but this is one of the best rivalries in college football.  BC fans would like nothing more than to ruin Notre Dame’s perfect season.

8.  #17 Texas Longhorns vs Iowa State Cyclones

The Longhorns will look to pick up their 8th win against a tough ISU team in Austin this weekend.  Texans love their college football!

9.   Viginia Tech Hokies vs #10 Florida State Seminoles

VA Tech is sitting at 4-5 and desperately needs a big win if they have any hope of making a decent bowl game this season.  FSU will be looking for another win with the hopes of cracking the top 10.

10.  Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. West Virginia Mountaineers

WVU has certainly fallen the past couple of weeks but they could become bowl bound with a win over OK State.
