Top Events of 2012

Top Events of 2012Happy new year!! It’s that time of year where we reflect upon the past year and start looking toward the future.  Confucius once said, “Study the past if you wish to define the future….”.  With that in mind we will look at some of the top ticketed events in 2012 and analyze what it means for 2013.  If 2013 is anything like 2012 be sure to start marketing top pop and country performers and be on the look out for growing segments of the like electronic/techno music and international soccer.  Also don’t forget about popular, yet under-marketed sports like NASCAR.

Top Events of 2012

1.  One Direction

There is no denying the fact that One Direction dominated the event ticket market in 2012.  In 2013 expect that trend to continue as their 2013 tour is sold out across the world.  That means that fans will be looking to the secondary ticket market to secure tickets to their concerts.  Although selling One Direction tickets is extremely competitive, you can make inroads by focusing on niche tickets (e.g. front row, meet and greet, VIP, etc.).

2.  International Soccer

We had to lump a few events here to have these international soccer matches come in at number 2 but there is no denying that soccer is growing as a sport in the U.S.  2012 saw a lot of matches between some of the most popular soccer clubs in the world and several MLS teams.  In 2013 keep your eye out for these international friendlies featuring teams like FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Liverpool, as well as the US, Mexico, and Canadian National Teams.

3. Electronic Music

Another fast growing segment of the event ticket industry is electronic or techno music.  It was a really good year for artists such as Skrillex, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Amon Tobin, Avicii, Steve Aoki, Girl Talk, Bassnectar, DJ Tiesto and Pretty Lights.  Look out for performances by any of these artists in 2013 including some of the popular electronic music festivals.

4. Kelly Clarkson

Kelly Clarkson’s 2012 Stronger Tour was a smashing success.  While Kelly has not announced any major tour plans for 2013 she will be playing with Jason Aldean at his special Wrigley Field concert.  If Ms. Clarkson’s popularity has taught us anything it’s that performers who can bridge genres (country and pop in particular) seem to do extremely well.  As such we expect Taylor Swift to have a huge 2013.

5.  Jason Aldean

Jason Aldean is one of the hottest country music performers around right now.  He had a fantastic 2012 that began with the tail leg of his 2012 My Kinda Party Tour and ended with the announcement of his 2013 Night Train Tour.  2013 should be another big year for Mr. Aldean as his solo stadium tours including a show at Fenway Park have already sold out.

6. NASCAR

It’s no secret that NASCAR is one of the most popular sports in the US.  However, most event ticket marketers ignore that sport for some reason.  The sport should continue to grow in 2013- especially the Sprint Cup Series.  Some of the more popular races include the Daytona 500, Food City 500, Samsung 500, Sprint Showdown and All-Star Race XXVIII, Coca-Cola 600, Bank of America 500, Brickyard 400 and the AAA Texas 500.

7.  Taylor Swift

What is remarkable about Taylor Swift’s appearance at #7 is that she was only relevant for the last few months of the year following the announcement of her 2013 Red Tour.  Taylor Swift’s popularity across multiple genres and age groups gives her a shot at challenging One Direction for the top spot in 2013.

8.  Eric Chruch

Country music’s Eric Church saw his star climb to new heights in 2012 with his solo Blood, Sweat and Beers Tour. 2013 should be just as good as Eric Church will continue his solo tour through february before joining Kenny Chesney on his No Shoes Nation Tour.  Country music appears to be here to stay so be sure to be on the lookout for the next big thing.

9.  Notre Dame Football

While college football is always a steady performer, usually a team comes from no where to capture the attention of the nation.  This year it was Notre Dame who came out of nowhere to become the #1 team in the Nation and earn a trip to the BCS Championship game.  For 2013 keep an eye out for Texas A&M as freshman Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “Football” Manziel will be getting them lots of national attention.

10.  Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber coming in at #10 is a bit of a surprise.  While just making the top ten is an achievement, many expected the Biebs to performer better.   It just goes to show you how quickly a pop-star can fade and be replaced- especially the young ones.  A lesson for 2013…jump on the next teen pop sensation early!

This top 10 list is compiled from internal search data from Tickifieds.com and organic traffic from search engines.  Search terms are ranked by using a combination of both sources of search data.

2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race Schedule

2012 NASCAR RACE ScheduleFrom an event ticket marketing perspective, NASCAR races are one of the most overlooked ticketed events in the industry.  Many do not realize that NASCAR races comprise 17 of the top 20 attended single day sporting events in the world- yes, the WORLD!  The 75 million NASCAR fans spend over $3 billion dollars annually – a great deal on that on event tickets. So if you haven’t started marketing NASCAR tickets you might want to take another look at one of the most popular sports in the world.

The 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series already in high gear – no pun intended.  Greg Biffle is the current points leader with 226 after 6 races.  Dale Earnhardt Jr. trails Biffle by 6 points (220), with Tony Stewart (214), Matt Kenseth (214), Kevin Harvick (214), Martin Truex Jr. (214), Denny Hamlin (210), Ryan Newman (202), Clint Bowyer (192), and Jimmie Johnson (189) rounding out the top 10.

Top Events This Weekend (April 13-15, 2012)

Josh Turner 2012 TourAfter taking a short break we are back to blogging about the top ticketed events happening this weekend.  This weekend we have a nice mix of hot concerts, major league baseball, major league soccer, some comedy, NHL Playoffs, and even a NASCAR race.  Since there are so many noteworthy events happening this weekend we decided to exclude the NHL playoffs from this top 10 list and write a separate article detailing the NHL playoff matchups.  So, here are your top 10 events happening this weekend

Top Events This Weekend (April 13-15, 2012)

  1. Josh Turner 4/13 Savannah, GA – Country crooner Josh Tuner has never been more popular thanks in large part to American Idol Scotty McCreery.  As such, JT’s sold out show in Savannah is the top event this weekend.
  2. The Naked & Famous 4/15 Chicago, IL – The indie rock band from New Zealand is making it big in the US in 2012.  Their show in Chicago is one of the most search for ticket.
  3. Alison Krauss and Union Station 4/14 Baltimore, MD – 2012 certainly seems like the year of country music as another country music act makes the top 10.
  4. NY Yankees vs LA Angels 4/13 New York, NY – The Yankees may be off to a slow start but fans are still excited for the Yanks to kickoff the 2012 season at home against Albert Puljols and the Anaheim Angels.
  5. St. Louis Cardinals vs Chicago Cubs 4/14 St. Louis, MO – It doesn’t get much better than the World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals opening up the 2012 season at home against the rival Chicago Cubs.  Oh wait, it would be better if they hadn’t lost Albert Puljols!
  6. NASCAR Samsung 500 4/14 Fort Worth, TX – Texans love their NASCAR and the Samsung 500 is one of the biggest races each year.
  7. Boston Red Sox vs Tampa Bay Rays 4/14 Boston, MA – Like the Yankees, the Red Sox might be in for a long year but that is not enough to keep fans from being their as the BoSox break in Fenway Park for the 2012 season.
  8. Daniel Tosh 4/14 Syracuse, NY – Daniel Tosh is probably the hottest comedian around these days.  His sold out show in Syracuse is one mighty tough ticket!
  9. LA Galaxy vs Portland Timbers 4/14 Carson, CA – MLS soccer seems to be growing rapidly and 2 of the more popular teams will be squaring off in Carson this weekend.
  10. Florence And The Machine 4/14 Santa Barbara, CA – Alt rockers Florence and the Machine will be invading the ever-popular Santa Barbara Bowl this weekend.

This top 10 list is compiled from data from our partner website Tickifieds.  Events are ranked by using a combination of page views, search queries, and unique visitors.

Top Ticket Search Queries 2/23/2012

If you are involved in search engine optimization (SEO) you are probably well aware that Google no longer passes on search query data for users that are logged into their Google accounts.  With these recent changes it is becoming more and more important to analyze search data where ever you can obtain it.  Unless your website gets substantial search engine traffic it can be difficult to gather meaningful search engine data when anywhere from 40-60% of searches have no keyword data associated with it.  Fortunately, since Tickifieds gets thousands of unique visitors each day from search engines (primarily Google), we still get useful referral data even with a loss of roughly half of the data.  So, if you are an event ticket marketing guru you will want to check out or blog regularly as we will try and keep you informed on event ticket search trends.

In this new regular feature we combine search terms from major referring search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, AOL, Ask, Alta Vista, and Lycos with our native search to come up with the top 20 most searched performers and/or events.  Long-tailed keywords (which often include date, location, venue) are aggregated by performer where applicable.  As you can see from the list below, the most  searched for tickets typically involve performers with recent on sale events or events happening in the immediate future.

Tops in today’s search are the alternative rockers Chevelle.  The band from Grayslake Illinois is currently wrapping up their winter 2012 tour with sold out shows in Portland (Maine), New York, Atlantic City, Baltimore, Norfolk, Indianapolis, and Oklahoma City.

Top Weekend Events 10/21 – 10/23

We’ve made it. We’re more than halfway through the week.  Yahoo!

This weekend’s top events list is, um…odd.  What an odd grouping of events.  Sure there’s still plenty of college football on the list, but some of the games are not expected to show up on the list.  For instance, what’s up with the New Mexico vs. Hawaii game?  I have to imagine it’s kind of a limited audience that would attend this game, no?  Perhaps fans are just eagerly waiting to see if their place-kick block issues will be resolved?

For your obvious games to make the list, clearly the Notre Dame vs. USC game will have a big draw.  Both teams recently had blowout wins (Notre Dame over Air Force and USC over Cal) and are looking to dominate each other.

And, have you realized the Texas A&M has shown up on the top weekend events list for the past 3 weeks?  Those Texans love their football.  As do the Okies.

For your non-football events, this weekend, the Talladega Speedway will be busy with the Sprint Cup Series.  The AMP Energy 500 (aka Good Sam Club 500) is one of four races that are currently run with restrictor plates. And the Coca-Cola 250 has been an exciting event held since 2006.  It was first held as the John Deere 250.

Sir Elton John leads the top weekend events list with his Vegas show.   John began his new show “The Million Dollar Piano” in Las Vegas in September at Caesars Palace, where he will perform at for the next 3 years.    Just recently, he performed his 3000th concert.  Wow! In his four-decade long career, he has sold more than 250 million records, earning him the honor of being one of the most successful artists of all time.

And, if you weren’t aware, Yo Gabba Gabba! is a kids show currently on Nick Jr.  Interesting point, Yo Gabba Gabba! was not invented by studio execs, but by two SoCal dads with no TV experience.   It is now a HUGE deal with the 2-4 year old sect.
