OU Sooners invited to 2011 Fiesta Bowl

Saturday, December 4th was a huge day for the 10th ranked Oklahoma Sooners  as they won their seventh Big 12 title when they defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a hard earned victory.  The Sooners came back from a 17 point deficit to beat the Huskers 23-20 to win the title.  OU Quarterback Landry Jones had 342 yards passing and 2 touchdowns with 1 rushing which steered the Sooners to the second biggest comeback in Big 12 Championship history.    Not to be outshone, place kicker Jimmy Stevens had a 27 yard field goal with 8 minutes left on the clock in the 4th quarter.  The Sooner’s defense cemented the victory.

Not only did they win the Big 12 title, but OU has secured an invitation to one of the most prestigious bowl games- the 2011 Tostitos Fiesta Bowl.   Started in 1971 the Fiesta Bowl features the Big 12 Champion against an at large opponent.  The 2011 Fiesta Bowl will be held at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Arizona on January 1st, 2011.  The Sooners are no strangers to the Fiesta Bowl, having appeared in 4 previous Fiesta Bowls; however, they only brought home the W one time.  West Virginia Mountaineers (2008), Boise State Broncos (2007), and Arizona State Sun Devils (1983) have all claimed victory over OU in the Fiesta Bowl.  The Sooners sole Fiesta Bowl win came in 1976 when they defeated Wyoming 41 to 7.

The Sooners will be looking bring home another triumph from the Fiesta Bowl.  The Oklahoma Sooners are currently ranked tenth in the nation with an 11-2 track record.  OU bore two difficult losses to Big 12 foes Missouri and Texas A&M.  Oklahoma’s offense team is a shining point on their resume with a passing attack that ranks #4 in the country.  The biggest opportunity for improvement for the Sooners this year has been their lacking defense – ranked just #58 in the country.  The Sooner’s offense and defense will certainly be challenged in this year’s Fiesta Bowl.  Hopefully they’re up for the challenge!
