World Cup Qualifier: Team USA

While not as popular in the United States, Soccer (or Football to the rest of you) is a worldwide phenomenon.  The men’s national soccer team (USMNT) competes in international association football competitions through CONCACAF or the Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football,  and are governed by the United States Soccer Federation.   Spain, Germany and Columbia currently hold the top three rankings in the world, according to the FIFA World Rankings and Team USA is ranked 22.  The World Football Elo has them ranked a bit higher at 20th in the world.  The USMNT have competed in the last six FIFA World Cups and also acted as world host for the 1994 Championships.

The USMNT participates in competitions all over the globe including the FIFA Confederations Cup, FIFA World Cup, CONCACAF Gold Cup as well others they are invited to.   The highest ranking that the US team has ever acheived was way back in 1930 World Cup where they earned the 3rd place finish.   They participated in a handful of other competitions until 1950 then afterwards, Team USA didn’t qualify for the World Cup again until 1990.

In the most current qualifications round, Team USA topped their third round qualification group by winning four matches with only one draw and one loss in 2012.   Just last month, on June 2, the Team USA took on 2nd-ranked Germany during a sold out competition at the RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C., in the Centennial celebration. This win was particularly notable as this was the first win over a top 2 ranked team a win against top-ranked Spain in the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup.  Four days later, on June 6 of this year,  the Team USA won against Jamaica.  Team USA continued on it’s winning streak against Panama on June 11th to an audience that was the seventh largest crowd to date to see the team play a World Cup Qualifier on US land.   Also of note, the USA vs. Panama game drew the second largest TV audience on ESPN for a US World Cup Qualifier in history. Since then, they have also won matched against Honduras and Guatemala.

On September 10, USA will take on Mexico in Columbus, OH and on October 11, USA will play Jamaica in Kansas City, MO in the World Cup Qualifier matches.

Top Events Week 5, 2012

Jeff Dunham Shows 2012Have any exciting plans this week?  If not, you might want to check your calender as we have another week filled with some top notch entertainment.  Although football  is on hiatus for a few weeks until Super Bowl XLVI takes place, there is still plenty of concert, theater, and sporting events to tickle just about anyone’s fancy.

Tops on the list this week is comedian Jeff Dunham’s show on Thursday night January 26th and the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Jeff Dunham is one of the highest grossing comedians currently performing- only Jerry Seinfeld has earned more since 2008.  Dunham is largely responsible for bringing back the art of ventriloquism (think fellow ventriloquist and Las Vegas staple Terry Fator).

The rest of the top 10 is filled with country music and sports which is no surprise to our regular readers.  So without further delay, here are the top 10 events this week!

Top Events 2012 Week 2 (1/23/2012 to 1/29/2012)

1.  Jeff Dunham 1/26/2012 New Orleans Arena, New Orleans, LA

Ventriloquism is alive and well thanks to funny man Jeff Dunham.  His show this week is New Orleans is one of the toughest tickets around!

2.  Bill Cosby 1/28/2012 Hult Center for the Performing Arts, Eugene, OR

Although Bill Cosby has been out of the spotlight for quite some time, he is still as popular as ever thanks to syndicated cable television.  Oregon is becoming quite the hub of comedy!

3.  Rascal Flatts 1/27/2012 Dunkin Donuts Center – Providence, RI

Country music icons Rascal Flatts are still selling plenty of tickets despite the fact that they are seemingly always on tour.  There most recent “Thaw out 2012″ is one of the hghest grossing of 2012 thus far.

4.  Miranda Lambert 1/27/2012 John Paul Jones Arena, Charlottesville, VA

Miranda Lambert has been a frequent visitor to the top events this week.  While I can’t say  I love listening to her music, I can say she is pleasing on the eyes.

5.  LSU vs Kentucky Basketball 1/29/2012 Baton Rougue, LA

The LSU Tigers will get a crack at the #1 ranked Kentucky Wildcats.  Although LSU is not particularly good this season sitting at 12-7, the Pete Maravich Assembly Center will be rocking for this SEC match-up.

6.  AMA Supercross 1/28/2012 Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, CA

The AMA Supercross is certainly becoming more and more popular by the day and is certainly one of the most underrated events in the event ticket market.

7.  Brad Paisley 1/27/2012 Maverik Center, Salt Lake, UT

Country music legend Brad Paisley is kicking strong with his 2012 Camobunga tour.  His show in Salt Lake is generating quite a bit of buzz and we are seeing large volumes of tickets trading hands.

8.  Monster Jam 1/28/2012 Florida Citrus Bowl, Orlando, FL

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday….errr  Saturday, Saturday, Saturday…the Monster Truck Jam is coming to Orlando.

9.  Mexico Vs. Venezuela Soccer 1/25/2012 Reliant Stadium, Houston, TX

Although I think watching soccer is about as much fun as watching paint dry, it sure seems to finally be catching on in the U.S.  International soccer matches such as this have been selling out large venues like Reliant Stadium for the past few years.

10.  Duke vs Maryland Basketball 1/25/2012 Durham, NC

The Duke Blue Devil – Maryland Terp rivalry is alive and well.  Tickets to Duke games are always tough to get and extremely expensive.

This top 10 list is compiled from data from our partner website Tickifieds.  Events are ranked by using a combination of page views, search queries, and unique visitors.

Top Weekend Events August 26 – 28

Happy Hump Day to you!

The trend for this weekend is Country Music!!  In particular interest are the Jason Aldean shows.  I can’t begin to say how many queries I’ve fielded about these two particular shows specifically.  This man’s shows are hot!  Fans are anxious to get their hands on tickets, ideally, lawn seats.

The American Idol shows also have a heavy fan following.  Past season’s winner country music singer, Scotty McCreary, headlines the show. His other top ten performers; Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone, Paul McDonald, Pia Toscano, Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia.

You should be used to seeing Kenny Chesney, ZBB and Keith Urban on the list by now.  American fans want to soak up the last bits of summer while they are able.  Country music should continue to be popular into early fall.

The Licking River Festival is a weekend of Americana/roots music,  food and drinks out in Kentucky which is big with the camping crowd.  The Festival will feature Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band and 20 other performers.

Two MLS soccer games made the list this weekend.  The Colorado Rapids at the Chicago Fire’s home turf and the Sounders against the Crew.  Interesting point of interest; the Sounder’s majority owner is Hollywood producer Joe Roth, and its minority owners are Adrian Hanauer, Paul Allen and Drew Carey. Keep your eye on other MLS soccer games.  The MLS season goes through October and the games are usually well priced!

Top Weekend Events August 19-21

Hello Wednesday!

First and foremost, I’d like to extend my condolences to the families affected by the collapsed stage at the Sugarland show at the Indiana State Fair.  You’re in our thoughts!

Not to be totally glossed over, but there do seem to be a few other state fair concerts on the list for this week.  While last week’s concert was surely a tragedy, it was a sad, but extremely rare occurrence.  Train and Lady Antebellum will both be performing at the Iowa and Indiana State Fairs respectively.

Other county music stars will be hitting the stage this weekend with huge fan interest.  Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Band are high again on the list with their summery sound.  Ms. Taylor Swift is once again on the list as well with her Speak Now tour which continues and will continue to draw a lot of interest.  Rascal Flatts, while always popular, seems to be getting even more popular these days.

Justin Beiber’s better half, Selena Gomez, takes the top spot for the weekend.   Selena Gomez and The Scene (the rest of her band) recently took home accolades from the RIAA for their song “Who Says” which went platinum.  The girl can sing!  Her days on Disney’s the Wizards of Wavery Place, dating the Bieb as well as her throngs of pre-tween fans can’t hurt either.

Old rivals the Chicago Cubs vs. the St. Louis Cardinals face off again this weekend.  Both teams have die-hard loyal fans, but sadly, the Cardinals have more World Series wins over the Cubbies.

And finally, once again the MLS has made another appearance on the top weekend events list.  The Houston Dynamo Soccer team will take on the Real Salt Lake.  Keep your eye out for MLS games!

Top Weekend Events August 5 – 7

Wow, can you believe it’s August already??  What happened to July?

As people soak up the last month of summer, fans are still coming out for all the hot concerts and sporting events.

Phish, once again, holds the top position.  Phish like Dave Matthews Band are pretty much the epitome of summer tour bands.  They are to be expected.

According to Redbook Magazine, Taylor Swift was the top concert people wanted to see this summer.  Her concert sales, even on the secondary ticket marketplace certainly correlate with this.

The Vans Warped Tour is on the list again for their Denver tour dates.  Some of the notable bands playing at Invesco Field include A Day to Remember, Against Me!, Attack Attack!, Gym Class Heros, Less Than Jake, Relient K, The Devil Wears Prada, The Expendables and We Came As Romans.

Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park is another big draw this weekend.  The top headliners for this weekend’s tour include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Other tops acts playing in Perry Farrell’s 20th anniversary vision include My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, The Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Beirut, Explosions in the Sky, Death from Above 1979, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Flogging Molly, Atmosphere, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, OK GO, Local Natives, The Kills, White Lies, Portugal. The Man, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding, Delta Spirit, Beats Antique, The Mountain Goats, Sleigh Bells, Manchester Orchestra, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Drums, Black Lips, Fitz & The Tantrums, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, City and Colour, Cults, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses and more.  Chicago is the place to be this weekend for music lovers.

The Gipsy Kings music has been described as “Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk.”  The band started in Southern France in the 1970’s and have been rising in popularity ever since.

Once again, the European soccer teams have shown up again on the top weekend list.    Like Manchester United and Real Madrid earlier this summer, expect  FC Barcelona to show the American team who the real soccer champs are.  Fans are still very excited to have these matches on their home turf and are wanting to see them live.
