Top Weekend Events July 22 – 24

Yay, the weekend is almost here!!

Is it as hot where you are as it is in the Midwest?  Ugh, it is blistering here.  On this top weekend list, I am seeing a lot of outdoor events.  Stay cool, everyone!

Well, the hot, hot, hot event of this weekend is the soccer match between England’s Manchester United and the Chicago Fire.  This particular event came up numerous times on the list.  These EU vs. America matches are sponsored in conjunction with the MLS and CAA Sports.  Manchester United is one ot the world’s most recognized clubs, winning 18 English Premier League Titles, four Carling Cups, three European Cups and an amazing 11 FA Cups.  Manchester United was also in Chicago last year, training at the Fire’s soccer-specific home (Toyota Park) then commencing on its four-stop North American Tour in 2010.

Sir Paul McCartney is another hot event, once again, this weekend.  This time he’s taking on the Tiger’s Comerica Park in Detroit.  Expect his remaining concerts in Chicago, Montreal and Cincinnati to also score big on the top weekend list for their respective weekends.

In the Pop music genre, Katy Perry and her Teenage Dreams tour is hot in Boise, ID.  There are usually too many large concerts that roll through Idaho, so I’m sure this is a big deal in their community.  Rihanna and her Loud tour finally made it to the list.  Her recent songs “S&M” and “California King Bed” are rapidly achieved top positions on the Billboard Hot 100 list.  She’s recently come under much scrutiny for her comments and recent relinking with former flame, Chris Brown, which ended disastrously.

The ladies of country and folk music have overthrown the menfolk this week.  Jennifer Nettles, Hillary Scott of Lady Antebellum and Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls prove that they’re just as popular in this genre as their male counterparts who have been making the top weekend list all summer long.

Even a couple rock bands are making the list.  Founded in 2009, Further is a band composed of former Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.  The band also includes former members of other bands including Dark Star Orchestra, RatDog, Benevoto/Russo Duo and until recently Primus.  A Perfect Circle is another Rock supergroup started in 1999.  The current line-up includes former members from Puscifer, Ashes Divide, The Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Devo and the Vandals.  A Perfect Circle will also be playing at Lollapalooza in Chicago.

Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers – NFC Championship Game

Two teams were crushed in the NFC Divisional Championship Games on the 15th and 16th of January.  In fact, those two teams probably are going to let their heads hang low for quite a while.  The Green Bay Packers annihilated the Atlanta Falcons on Saturday, while the Bears rolled over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Atlanta just never seemed like they could get their act together on Saturday.  Aaron Rodgers, QB for the Packers, was spot on all night.  The Falcons just couldn’t keep up with Rodgers quick thinking, laser eye and rocket arm.  He was unstoppable.   He threw 366 yards and had 3 touchdowns.  Not too shabby, eh?    The Atlanta Falcons turned the ball over four times, couldn’t protect their quarterback Matt Ryan, committed seven penalties, got slaughters in time of possession and gave away a season high in points. Green Bay took down Atlanta 48-21.

The Bears also are making quite the impressive showing against the Seahawks.  While the Seattle Seahawks had a very impressive victory the week previous when they trampled the Super Bowl defending New Orleans Saints, but the Bears just didn’t care.  They were going to win the game, and that’s what they‘re doing .  The snowy and cold conditions at their home turf, also worked to the Bears favor.   The Bears took home three touchdowns in the first half alone with the help of Jay Cutlers fine throwing and skill.  Not to be outshone, Greg Olson is the first Bears tight end to get 100 yards in a playoff game ever, even under the jurisdiction on Mike Ditka and his championship Bears back in ’85.  Nice work, Mr. Lovie Smith.  The Chicago Bears are in the process of taking down the Seattle Seahawks 28 to nothing mid third quarter.  It’s pretty much inevitable how this game will end.

Soo….boiled down, what does this all mean????  The Green Bay Packers will be playing the Chicago Bears on Sunday the 23rd for the NFC Championship title at Soldier Field in Chicago, IL.  This is like a Midwesterners best dream matchup ever.  The Bears and the Packers have a long-standing feud and rivalry.  They have competed against each other 180 times. The Bears currently hold winning record against the Packers with a record of 92–82–6 in head-to-head matches.

A brief history of the Packers and Bears Championship History:

Green Bay Packers

  • Starting with the1992 season, the Packers had 13 non-losing seasons in a row (their worst record being 8–8 in 1999)
  • Two Super Bowl appearances
  • One Super Bowl win (Super Bowl XXXI).
  • They returned to playoff form with winning campaigns in 2007 (13–3)
  • Competed in the NFC Championship game, 2009 (11–5), and in 2010 (10-6) under current head coach Mike McCarthy.

Chicago Bears

  • Won nine NFL Championships (eight pre-merger, and one Super Bowl).
  • The Bears have also recorded more regular season and overall victories than any other NFL franchise.
  • The franchise recorded its 700th win on November 18, 2010

2010 Chicago Bears Season Preview

The 2009 Chicago Bears season was full of hope as they landed their first bonafide franchise quarterback since Sid Luckman (1939-1950).  However,  new franchise quarterback Jay Cutler failed to live up to expectations and former Rookie of the Year running back Matt Forte took a huge step backwards.  Last season Jay Cutler threw for  3666 yards and 27 touchdown (unfortunatley he also threw 26 interceptions) and Matt Forte rushed for just 929 yards (a paltry 3.6 yards per carry average). To make matters worse, the defense lost a key member as Brain Urlacher was forced to miss most of the season due to injury.  A lackluster offensive, an aging and injured defense, and a pourous secondary left the Bears at just 7-9 for the season, missing the playoffs once again.

Although the 2009 Chicago Bears season was a major diaster, fans again are optimistic about their chances to win the NFC North in 2010.  Why you may ask?  Well the Bears have a new offensive coordinator in Mike Martz who should help Jay Cutler progress.  In addition, they added an outstanding situational running back in Chester Taylor, will be getting Brian Urlacher back, and made a big free agent signing in defensive lineman Julius Peppers. While the core of the Chicago Bears has remained the same, the Bears have added some key players that should help them get over the hump in 2010.

Ultimately the Bears success in 2010 will come down to the play of Jay Cutler.  Any improvement from last year and you have to think the Bears are a playoff team.    A revamped offensive line should give Cutler more time in the pocket and an improved running game should take the ability of their opponent to line up against the pass.  Their defense has no where to go but up as well.   Brian Urlacher will greatly help the linebacking corps, Julius Peppers will help put pressure on the opposing quarterback, and Chris Harris and Major Wright should improve the secondary. If this team can stay healthy, they should be a dangerous team.

Now matter what your outlook on the Bears this season is, there is no doubt going to a Chicago Bears game at Soldier Field is an incredible experience.  If you are looking for great deals on Chicago Bears Tickets be sure to check out ChicagoingTickets.com for exclusive ticket deals in Chicago or check out our Chicago Bears Ticket Classifieds.
