Phish on Tour Summer 2011

It’s official.  American Jam-Band, Phish will be on tour again in 2011.  After first announcing their reemergence two years ago, Phish has been going strong and will have another tour filled summer.

Trey Anastasio, Phish’s front man has been touring the country recently, selling out highly coveted shows.  Trey is credited with composing 152 of Phish’s orginal sounds, 140 of them as a solo credit.  He even placed 73 on the Rolling Stone list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003.  The man is talented.  The other 3 band members of Phish include Mike Gordon, Jon Fishman and Page McConnell and they have performed together for over 20 years.   Their popularity as a live band is due to the fact that each of their concerts is original in terms of the songs that they perform, order they appear in and the manner in which they are played.  A Phish groupie could never be bored with their performances.

Phish has most often been compared to the Grateful Dead, the pioneer example of a jam band.  Other similarities are drawn frequently between the Allman Brothers and Widespread Panic.  The fans of the bands often tour for weeks at a time, traveling from show to show.

Phish is so popular, the even have their own Ben and Jerry’s flavor, Phish Food!

The 2011 tours starts off Memorial Day weekend at the bethel Woods Center for the Arts in Bethel, NY and the 18-date tour continues through June 19th at nTelos Wireless Pavilion in Portsmouth, VA. The Tour primarily focuses on the East Coast, near their home state of New Hampshire.

Comic Spotlight: Jim “Hot Pockets” Gaffigan

As a big fan of standup comedy, comedian Jim Gaffigan holds a bacon grease laden place in my cholesterol clogged heart.  I may be a bit biased as Mr. Gaffigan was born in raised in Chesterton, Indiana (a place where I lived for a few years post college) but he is one of the funniest and unique comedians around today.   While the name Jim Gaffigan might not sound all that familiar I am sure you have seen some of his work.

Jim Gaffigan is probably most famous for his bit poking fun of the microwave delicacy known as “Hot Pockets” – see video clip above.  Jim has also appeared several times on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Dr. Katz, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, That ’70s Show, Flight of the Conchords, Law and Order, and the TBS series My BoysMy Boys in my opinion is one of the most underrated sitcoms out there.  What makes it especially enjoyable is the fact that the comedy takes place in Chicago and is centered on a beat reporter for the Chicago Cubs.  Jim Gaffigan’s character Andy resides in Hoffman Estates and they constantly poke fun at the Chicagoland suburbs.  It’s too bad Jim Gaffigan is no longer a part of the show.  Jim has also appeared in several commercials for Sierra Mist with Micahel Ian Black- my favorite being the infamous “Holiday Hawk” (see below video).

Aside from Jim TV and movie career, he has released 7 standup comedy albums including:  Luigi’s Doghouse (2001), Economics II (2001), More Moo Moos (2003), The Last Supper (2004), Doing My Time (2004), Beyond the Pale (2006), and King Baby (2009).  Jim is currently on tour promoting his latest release King Baby.  Remain tour dates are listed below.
