2011 Concert Tickets Sales Rebound

U2 still the top concert in town!

U2 is still the king as they top the list of 2011 Concerts with $85.8 million in gross revenue.

According to the Pollstar Mid Year Business Analysis, 2011 concert ticket sales are well ahead of the 2010 pace.  The top 100 North American tours have grossed 1.2 billion dollars thus far-  a 157 million more than the previous year (16.2%).  The jump in revenue can be largely attributed to a substantial increase in average ticket price.  In the first half of 2011, the average ticket price increased by $6.25 (or 10.2%).  Although the increasing price of tickets certainly influenced the bottom-line, more tickets were also sold in 2011.  This year 16.7 million tickets have been sold in comparison to the 15.9 million in 2010- an increase of 5.3%. All in all, this data suggests that the demand for concert tickets has rebounded from a very sluggish 2010.

Not surprising, U2 was the highest grossing North American tour in the first half of 2011.  Through 6/30/2011, U2 has sold nearly 1 million tickets with an average price of almost $88 each.  Their 11 city /14 show tour has netted  $85.8 million or an average of $7.8 million per show.

Coming in a distant #2 is Lady Gaga whose 38 city / 40 show tour sold 674,795 tickets with an average ticket price of a whopping $96.77 (gross $65.3 Mil).  Rounding out the top 5 are Bon Jovi ($57.4 mil), Kenny Chesney ($46.7 mil), and Luis Miguel ($33.9 mil).  Young country music star Taylor Swift came in at #6 with a gross of $29.5 million just ahead of Elton John ($28.0 mil), Lil Wayne ($26.3 mil), Celine Dion (23.9 mil), and Rod Stewart & Stevie Nicks ($22.2 mil).

Many other acts did not make the top 10 in total gross revenue but had extremely high average grosses.  These acts will likely produce solid numbers in the second half of 2011.  These performers include:  Marco Antonio Solis ($1.1 mil per show), Mana ($2.5 mil per show), Shakira ($1.4 mil per show), Eric Clapton ($1.1 mil per show), Chayenne ($1.2 mil per show), Phish ($1.0 mil per show), George Strait with Reba & Lee Ann Womack ($1.0 mil per show), and Price ($1.1 mil per show).

Other high grossing performer include:  Bob Seger and The Silver Bullet Band, Rush, Iron Maiden, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Rammstein, Enrique Iglesias, Rihanna, Jimmy Buffet, Janet Jackson, and New Kids on the Block / Backstreet Boys.  Look for these acts to be some of the most popular events this summer and fall.

Top Weekend Events June 3rd – 5th

Can you believe it’s actually Wednesday again?  Memorial Day Weekend just absolutely blew by.

If you look at this upcoming weekend’s top events list, one thing is very apparent.  Summer concert season is upon us!  People want to go hear live music!

With the exception of the Memorial Golf Tournament (which was also on last week’s list), the musical genre runs from pop to country to jam bands to alternative.  People want it all!

Brett Dennen is an up and coming folk/pop singer from Northern Cali.  His music has been featured on a number of television shows including: Roadtrip Nation on PBS, Grey’s Anatomy, House, Scrubs and The Unit.  His fourth album was just released in April.  Keep an eye on this guy, his celebrity is about to sky rocket.

For your other fairly new artist on the list, there is The Script and Adele.  The Script will be playing in Central Park this weekend and already has an exceptionally loyal fan base.   They are an Irish indie rock band.  Their music has been featured on video games and TV shows like 90210, Ghost Whisperer, The Hills, East Enders and The Vampire Diaries.  All of those shows are incredibly popular with the teen/early 20’s crowd.  And, as if you didn’t already know, Adele tickets are hot, hot hot!!!  Any remaining available tickets to her shows shoot up in price very quickly.  Her rise in fame in the US is correlated very closely with her 2008 appearance on Saturday Night Live.  She had already attracted much attention in her home nation of Britan. She has gained much acclaim and recognition both commercially and critically.  She is another to keep your eye on very closely.

Fan’s perennial favorites; U2, Phish, and Kenny Chesney show up again on this list as they so often have in the past.

New Kids on the Block featuring Back Street Boys (NKOTBBSB) finally makes their first appearance on this list with their Boston show.  The 80’s boy band teamed up with the 90’s boy band in a cross country, many stop tour that is very popular with ladies of those generations.  Tickets can still be found for reasonable prices.

Top Weekend Events – May 27 – May 30

Here are your top weekend events for this upcoming Memorial Weekend. There are a number of notable events going on this weekend which draw a lot of attention which are not surprisingly showing up on the list below.

The Indianapolis 500 is an annual event and is considered one of the three most significant motorsports events (others include the Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 hours of Le Mans) in the world and typically fills every seat and infield.  The race consists of 200 laps and 500 miles and the ultimate goal of the racers is to win the Triple Crown of Motorsport, but winning this race and the other two.

Of course the NBA Playoffs are still going on.  The Dallas Mavericks showed the OKC Thunder who’s boss and made quick work on them,  4 -1.  The Chicago Bulls are struggling against the Heat.  MVP, Derrick Rose, just can’t bring the team a W against forces like James, Wade and Bosh.  This is a do or die game for the Bulls.

Sasquatch! Music Festival in Washington is a huge, 3-day, outdoor event that will feature amazing acts such as Foo Fighters, Death Cab for Cutie Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, Wilco and many, many others.

The Memorial Golf Tournament is a PGA Tournament founded by master golfer, Jack Nicklaus and held in Columbus, Nicklaus’ home town.  Tiger Woods has the most victories under his belt in this tournament, having won four times.  But he’s currently down with a unexplained leg injury.

Holding the top spot on the list this weekend is the jam band, Phish.  They’re the Grateful Dead of this generation.

Bruno Mars shows up a couple of times on the list.  His fun, quirky songs like “Just the Way you Are” and “The Lazy Song” are catchy with many age groups.  He’s not just a slacker with a good voice though.  Did you know he also wrote the hooks for the songs “Nothin’ on You” by B.o.B, and “Billionaire” byTravie McCoy. He also co-wrote the hits “Right Round” by Flo Rida featuring Kesha, “Wavin’ Flag” by K’naan, and “Fuck You!” by Cee Lo Green.  Do not underestimate this guy.

So there you have it, the top events going on this Memorial Day Weekend.  Have fun and be safe!

Top Weekend Events – May 20 – 22nd

Welcome to your Wednesday.

This week’s top events list brings an odd mix of events.  It has everything from baseball to Nascar to Country Music to Wrestling to Heavy Metal.

The top even for the weekend is the Cubs vs. Red Sox game taking place at Fenway Park.  Each of these teams has die-hard, loyal fans.  The Red Sox hold a very interesting title within the MLB, one they’ve held for the past 8 years, every game since May 15, 2003, has sold out.  Recently, they have won the World Series Championship in 2003 and 2007.  Sadly, the Cubs have not been that lucky.  They haven’t won a World Championship in 102 years, the longest draught of any MLB team.  Perhaps this is the year and they can win it for the late Ron Santo who passed away late last year.

The NHRA O’Reilly Summer Nationals is full throttle drag racing.  This is the 60th anniversary season of the NHRA.  There are 22 Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock care events and 16 Pro Stock Motorcycle Events on schedule.  This is a very loud and very fun event.

For your music events, the one to take exceptional note of it the Jason Aldean show at Riverbend.  This particular show has garnered A LOT of attention on Free Ticket Classifieds.  Fans are all of sudden hankering for tickets.  Lawn Seats are of particular interest to the fans.  Sugarland has a very strong fan base, as evident by them showing up on the Top Weekend Events list for multiple weeks in a row.  This is U2’s first appearance on the list.  The shows on tour now are make-up shows from when Bono cancelled last year due to a serious back injury.  The U2 360 Tour is the highest grossing tour to date in history, beating out the $558 million earnings from the Rolling Stones tour the year previous.  Since these are make-up shows, tickets are really cheap.  I’m surprised to see System of a Down on the list because, while they have a strong fan base, it’s a pretty specific demographic that is drawn to them.  Serj Tankian, the lead singer, had great success on his debut solo Album in 2007 while the band was on hiatus.  In later 2010, SOAD announced that they would be reuniting for festival dates in Europe and a few in the States.

Glee Live! In Concert! is a concert tour featuring the members of the cast of the infinitely popular television series on Fox.  Fans are crazy about the show and the concert series as well.  Their popularity knows no bounds at this time.
