Happy new year!! It’s that time of year where we reflect upon the past year and start looking toward the future. Confucius once said, “Study the past if you wish to define the future….”. With that in mind we will look at some of the top ticketed events in 2012 and analyze what it means for 2013. If 2013 is anything like 2012 be sure to start marketing top pop and country performers and be on the look out for growing segments of the like electronic/techno music and international soccer. Also don’t forget about popular, yet under-marketed sports like NASCAR.
Top Events of 2012
1. One Direction
There is no denying the fact that One Direction dominated the event ticket market in 2012. In 2013 expect that trend to continue as their 2013 tour is sold out across the world. That means that fans will be looking to the secondary ticket market to secure tickets to their concerts. Although selling One Direction tickets is extremely competitive, you can make inroads by focusing on niche tickets (e.g. front row, meet and greet, VIP, etc.).
2. International Soccer
We had to lump a few events here to have these international soccer matches come in at number 2 but there is no denying that soccer is growing as a sport in the U.S. 2012 saw a lot of matches between some of the most popular soccer clubs in the world and several MLS teams. In 2013 keep your eye out for these international friendlies featuring teams like FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Chelsea, Liverpool, as well as the US, Mexico, and Canadian National Teams.
3. Electronic Music
Another fast growing segment of the event ticket industry is electronic or techno music. It was a really good year for artists such as Skrillex, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Amon Tobin, Avicii, Steve Aoki, Girl Talk, Bassnectar, DJ Tiesto and Pretty Lights. Look out for performances by any of these artists in 2013 including some of the popular electronic music festivals.
4. Kelly Clarkson
Kelly Clarkson’s 2012 Stronger Tour was a smashing success. While Kelly has not announced any major tour plans for 2013 she will be playing with Jason Aldean at his special Wrigley Field concert. If Ms. Clarkson’s popularity has taught us anything it’s that performers who can bridge genres (country and pop in particular) seem to do extremely well. As such we expect Taylor Swift to have a huge 2013.
5. Jason Aldean
Jason Aldean is one of the hottest country music performers around right now. He had a fantastic 2012 that began with the tail leg of his 2012 My Kinda Party Tour and ended with the announcement of his 2013 Night Train Tour. 2013 should be another big year for Mr. Aldean as his solo stadium tours including a show at Fenway Park have already sold out.
It’s no secret that NASCAR is one of the most popular sports in the US. However, most event ticket marketers ignore that sport for some reason. The sport should continue to grow in 2013- especially the Sprint Cup Series. Some of the more popular races include the Daytona 500, Food City 500, Samsung 500, Sprint Showdown and All-Star Race XXVIII, Coca-Cola 600, Bank of America 500, Brickyard 400 and the AAA Texas 500.
7. Taylor Swift
What is remarkable about Taylor Swift’s appearance at #7 is that she was only relevant for the last few months of the year following the announcement of her 2013 Red Tour. Taylor Swift’s popularity across multiple genres and age groups gives her a shot at challenging One Direction for the top spot in 2013.
8. Eric Chruch
Country music’s Eric Church saw his star climb to new heights in 2012 with his solo Blood, Sweat and Beers Tour. 2013 should be just as good as Eric Church will continue his solo tour through february before joining Kenny Chesney on his No Shoes Nation Tour. Country music appears to be here to stay so be sure to be on the lookout for the next big thing.
9. Notre Dame Football
While college football is always a steady performer, usually a team comes from no where to capture the attention of the nation. This year it was Notre Dame who came out of nowhere to become the #1 team in the Nation and earn a trip to the BCS Championship game. For 2013 keep an eye out for Texas A&M as freshman Heisman Trophy winner Johnny “Football” Manziel will be getting them lots of national attention.
10. Justin Bieber
Justin Bieber coming in at #10 is a bit of a surprise. While just making the top ten is an achievement, many expected the Biebs to performer better. It just goes to show you how quickly a pop-star can fade and be replaced- especially the young ones. A lesson for 2013…jump on the next teen pop sensation early!
