Top Weekend Events – May 20 – 22nd

Welcome to your Wednesday.

This week’s top events list brings an odd mix of events.  It has everything from baseball to Nascar to Country Music to Wrestling to Heavy Metal.

The top even for the weekend is the Cubs vs. Red Sox game taking place at Fenway Park.  Each of these teams has die-hard, loyal fans.  The Red Sox hold a very interesting title within the MLB, one they’ve held for the past 8 years, every game since May 15, 2003, has sold out.  Recently, they have won the World Series Championship in 2003 and 2007.  Sadly, the Cubs have not been that lucky.  They haven’t won a World Championship in 102 years, the longest draught of any MLB team.  Perhaps this is the year and they can win it for the late Ron Santo who passed away late last year.

The NHRA O’Reilly Summer Nationals is full throttle drag racing.  This is the 60th anniversary season of the NHRA.  There are 22 Top Fuel, Funny Car and Pro Stock care events and 16 Pro Stock Motorcycle Events on schedule.  This is a very loud and very fun event.

For your music events, the one to take exceptional note of it the Jason Aldean show at Riverbend.  This particular show has garnered A LOT of attention on Free Ticket Classifieds.  Fans are all of sudden hankering for tickets.  Lawn Seats are of particular interest to the fans.  Sugarland has a very strong fan base, as evident by them showing up on the Top Weekend Events list for multiple weeks in a row.  This is U2’s first appearance on the list.  The shows on tour now are make-up shows from when Bono cancelled last year due to a serious back injury.  The U2 360 Tour is the highest grossing tour to date in history, beating out the $558 million earnings from the Rolling Stones tour the year previous.  Since these are make-up shows, tickets are really cheap.  I’m surprised to see System of a Down on the list because, while they have a strong fan base, it’s a pretty specific demographic that is drawn to them.  Serj Tankian, the lead singer, had great success on his debut solo Album in 2007 while the band was on hiatus.  In later 2010, SOAD announced that they would be reuniting for festival dates in Europe and a few in the States.

Glee Live! In Concert! is a concert tour featuring the members of the cast of the infinitely popular television series on Fox.  Fans are crazy about the show and the concert series as well.  Their popularity knows no bounds at this time.

Top Weekend Events – May 13th – 15th

And, once again, we’ve made it to see another Wednesday.  This weekend is yet another formidable Friday the 13th.  Very frightening.  Friday the 13th however, according to the list below, seems like a great time to see some comedy or go hear some music.

Every week I’m surprised by what’s popular that week.  It’s ranged from country music, Cirque shows, hockey, baseball, you name it.  This week, Comedy is taking charge.  Mr. Jerry Seinfeld is taking top listing this week.  He has been doing stand-up shows across the country from Buffalo, NY to Oakland, CA.  His last show will be in Atlantic City, NJ on August 13th, 2011.  Obviously, Jerry Seinfeld rose to fame with his show Seinfeld and included other comedians like Michael Richards, Jason Alexander and Julie Louis-Dreyfus.

Female comedian Chelsea Handler shows up twice on this list.  She has her own raunchy and very blunt talk show, Chelsea Lately which can be seen on the E! Cable Television Network.  Not many people know that she also has her only feature column in Cosmopolitan Magazine.  The well rounded lady has even authored three books on the New York Times Best Seller List.  Her books include My Horizontal Life: A Collection of one-Night Stands, Are You There Vodka, It’s Me, Chelsea, and Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang.

Not to be outshone, Kathy Griffin is another very funny lady to make an appearance on the list.  Ms. Griffin actually gained her first recognition for two appearances on Seinfeld.  Her show, Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, has even won two Emmy Awards.  Her comic routine usually involves heavy celebrity mockery, which has garnered her a lot of attention, both good and bad.

Country Music is also well represented on this list.  Tim McGraw’s Emotional Traffic Tour featuring opening acts Luke Bryan and The Band Perry is going exceptionally well and is playing in many venues.  Jason Aldean makes another appearance on this list. Of his single albums, five have reached the number one position on the Hot Country Charts and six more have reached top ten status.  His songs resonate with fans.  Sugarland’s albums almost fly off the shelves and their concerts are almost equally as popular.  Their latest album, “The Incredible Machine” is most popular to date.
