Top Weekend Events 10/07/11 – 10/09/11

Woo hoo…it’s practically the weekend.

I think, foreseeable future, the Top Weekend Events list should be renamed as The Top College Football Games this Weekend list.  Although, it should be noted and highlighted that a concert made the list this weekend.  Taylor Swift’s Dallas show has attracted much fan interest and people are still clamoring for tickets.

Of note for college football this weekend especially is the Georgia vs. Tennessee game.  This is a big, big game in the SEC East.  If Georgia wins this game, their game with Florida on 10/29 will be a deciding one.  It could potentially decide who wins the division.  Georgia is expected to win this game, but only by a slim margin.

Last weekend, Auburn’s win over South Carolina surprised many; however, neither Auburn nor Arkansas has much of a chance at winning the SEC West title.  That title is pretty firmly in the LSU Tiger’s hands.

The Texas Oklahoma game should be exciting, even though it seems like it’s received ZERO media attention.  Texas is currently ranked 11th in the country, and no one seems to notice.  Oklahoma is expected to win this game, but if Texas were to pull through, that would be huge!

Nebraska vs. Ohio is only considered a big game since it’s a Big 10 matchup.  The OSU Buckeyes have had a pretty poor showing lately, and it shouldn’t be of any surprise if they lose to the Cornhuskers.

And even though Texas Tech may take an early lead, the Texas A&M Aggies should be expected to overthrow the Red Raiders easily.

Top Weekend Events – Labor Day Weekend

Hello Wednesday!  Excited for the long weekend?

Besides this being Labor Day, this is also opening weekend for College Football!  Hooray!  There are a ton of games that are getting a lot of attention this weekend.  The top two games have been hot for weeks and weeks.  In the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff game, No. 5 Boise State begins yet another season playing across the country on a field that is unbiased only in name.  This time around the Broncos are entering into Southeastern Conference territory to take on No.19 ranked Georgia.  Both teams are very motivated to prove their worth, so this should be a very interesting game!

The Cowboy Classic is another game that is highly anticipated.  A lot of the interest stems from No. 6 LSU losing quarterback Jordan Jefferson and three others in a bar brawl that put people in the hospital.  This move definitely gives the No.5 Ducks and edge in the competition.  This game marks the first meeting between the teams since 1977 and only the fourth overall with LSU winning two of the games.

The Tennis US Open is another hot event going on this weekend.  This event has been going on since 1881 and is one of the oldest tennis championships in the world.  Since 1981, the US Open has been, in order, the fourth and last major tennis competition which comprises the Grand Slam (the others being the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon).  US Open is a two week event always surrounding Labor Day Weekend. The top players to watch are Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and until today,  her sister Venus Williams.  Venus Williams is now out of the competition with a medical condition.

Since the College Football season is now in full swing, expect concerts to show up less and less often on the list, unless the show is really popular.  Such is the case with Lady Antebellum and their current tour, Own the Night.

Top Weekend Events August 5 – 7

Wow, can you believe it’s August already??  What happened to July?

As people soak up the last month of summer, fans are still coming out for all the hot concerts and sporting events.

Phish, once again, holds the top position.  Phish like Dave Matthews Band are pretty much the epitome of summer tour bands.  They are to be expected.

According to Redbook Magazine, Taylor Swift was the top concert people wanted to see this summer.  Her concert sales, even on the secondary ticket marketplace certainly correlate with this.

The Vans Warped Tour is on the list again for their Denver tour dates.  Some of the notable bands playing at Invesco Field include A Day to Remember, Against Me!, Attack Attack!, Gym Class Heros, Less Than Jake, Relient K, The Devil Wears Prada, The Expendables and We Came As Romans.

Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park is another big draw this weekend.  The top headliners for this weekend’s tour include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Coldplay and Muse.  Other tops acts playing in Perry Farrell’s 20th anniversary vision include My Morning Jacket, Deadmau5, A Perfect Circle, Cee Lo Green, Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley & Nas, The Cars, Ween, Bright Eyes, Arctic Monkeys, Big Audio Dynamite, Deftones, Beirut, Explosions in the Sky, Death from Above 1979, Ratatat, Crystal Castles, Flogging Molly, Atmosphere, Cold War Kids, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, OK GO, Local Natives, The Kills, White Lies, Portugal. The Man, Two Door Cinema Club, Ellie Goulding, Delta Spirit, Beats Antique, The Mountain Goats, Sleigh Bells, Manchester Orchestra, Smith Westerns, Best Coast, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, The Drums, Black Lips, Fitz & The Tantrums, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, City and Colour, Cults, Ryan Bingham & The Dead Horses and more.  Chicago is the place to be this weekend for music lovers.

The Gipsy Kings music has been described as “Spanish flamenco and Romani rhapsody meet salsa funk.”  The band started in Southern France in the 1970’s and have been rising in popularity ever since.

Once again, the European soccer teams have shown up again on the top weekend list.    Like Manchester United and Real Madrid earlier this summer, expect  FC Barcelona to show the American team who the real soccer champs are.  Fans are still very excited to have these matches on their home turf and are wanting to see them live.
