Top Events Week 6, 2012

With Super Bowl XLVI taking place this weekend it is no wonder that the top 3 events this week are all Super Bowl related.  The Super Bowl is always a hot ticket but this year is especially big due to the teams involved:  the New York Giants and New England Patriots.  Not only do you have two of the largest sports markets in the country involved but you also have the two that hate each other the most.  Most people think of the Boston-New York rivalry as between Red Sox and Yankees fans.  However, the hatred spills over to all sports (Celtics vs Knicks, Patriots vs Jets/Giants, Bruins vs Rangers, etc.).  The NFL took a lot of heat for hosting the Super Bowl in a cold weather city (Indianapolis) but it doesn’t look like they are going to have any trouble attracting fans to all the festivities.Super Bowl XLVI

New York Giants Running Game Needs A Boost

The Indianapolis Colts beat the New York Giants handily in week 2 by a final score of 38-14. The previous week the Colts were manhandled by the Houston Texans line of scrimmage and they gave up an amazing 257 yards rushing. Going into the Indianapolis game many thought New York would incorporate the same zone blocking scheme to gash the Colts defense and keep Peyton Manning and the offense off the field controlling the line of scrimmage. Well that did not happen whatsoever as the game was pretty much decided by halftime.

The New York Giants have historically been a running team. They won three Super Bowls with a power running game. Brandon Jacobs has been part of the running back core since 2005 and has been a starter since 2007. In ‘07 and ‘08 he rushed for over 1000 yards each season with an excellent yards per carry average of 5.0. In ‘08 he scored 15 touchdowns. New York Giants fans ask themselves what is wrong with him now? In 2009 his production dipped to 835 yards and a yards per carry average of 3.7.

Now thru two games this season he has only rushed for 52 yards on 16 carries. His yards per carry average is not good either at 3.3. He lost his starting running back position to fourth year back Ahmad Bradshaw also. The Giants have become increasingly frustrated with Jacobs’s inclination for dancing instead of running up the middle hard, as he used to be a power runner. Coughlin screamed at Jacobs as he came off the field against the Colts and his day was finished after he did not hit the hole hard in a second quarter run. If the Giants have any chance of winning the NFC East and going deep into postseason they need two healthy running backs to produce. Bradshaw is coming off surgery to fix cracked bones in both feet and bone spurs in his ankle. Although he has been playing well this season he will need to be rested for portions of games. If Jacobs cannot produce and lose his attitude the Giants will be in trouble.
