Top Weekend Events – June 10th – 12th

Hello Wednesday!

Summer concerts are still heating up the top weekend events list.  I expect this trend to continue for many more weeks.  While concerts are to be anticipated on this list, I would have thought at least one game of our nation’s pastime would have shown up.  Not one baseball game came anywhere close to making the list.

Some old favorites like Phish, Taylor Swift and Kenny Chesney show up again on the list.  Their fan bases are unparalleled.  Bruno Mars and his Lazy Song seem to be this summer’s anthem on most radio stations.  Florence and the Machine is new to this list.  This band is in the same Indie vein as Mumford & Sons.  Both bands have incredibly unique sounds, only play small venues and their popularity is on the verge of super-stardom.   Florence Welch is the English fiery red-headed leader of this band.  They have had songs appear on shows such as The Vampire Diaries, Nikita, Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl and So You Think You Can Dance, as well as a song in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.  New music should be coming from the band soon.  Keep your eye on this band.

I actually very surprised to see Deep Purple on the list.  They are an English Rock band formed in the same era as Led Zepplin and Black Sabbath.  Some think of Deep Purple as being pioneers of heavy metal and modern rock.

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the main association football (that’s Soccer to us American’s) competition of the men’s national football team overseen by CONCACAF.   This competition determines the regional champion of North American, Central America and the Caribbean.   The winner of the competition goes on to compete in the FIFA Confederations Cup.  Did you catch all that?  Since the formation of the Gold Cup, a tournament to crown the region champion, in 1991 Mexico has won five times, the United states four times and once by the Canadians.

Summer Concert Season!

It’s summer, and that can only mean one thing, it’s concert season!  People are clamoring for great music once again.

Some of the big shows have already shown up in the weekend top 10 lists like Phish, New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney.  As always, any kind of outdoor festival like the Vans Warped Tour and Bamboozle has strong appeal.

Other hot tours include the American Idols Live!, Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Mumford & Sons, Taylor Swift.

The American Idols Live! Tour features current winner Scotty McCreery and his country music counterpart and 1st runner up, Lauren Alaina.  This show will showcase the top 11 contestants of the 10th season, also including Haley Reinhart, James Durbin, Jacob Lusk, Casey Abrams, Stefano Langone, Paul Mcdonald, Pia Toscano, Naima Adedapo and Thia Megia.  This is a 47 date tour and will start in Utah on July 6th and end in New York on September 10th.

Britney Spears and her Femme Fatale tour have hit the pavement strong.  Her fan base is exceptionally loyal and is coming in droves to see her.  Her latest album debuted at the number one spot on the Billboard Charts, making her the first and only female artist to ever have six number one debut albums.  Nicki Minaj is Britney’s current opening act, after there was a last minute drop out of Latin hunk, Enrique Iglesias.  Her shows are always a spectacle.

The newly minted Mrs. Russell Brand is another pop concert that is sure to not disappoint.  Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream tour is fun and poppy and always catchy.  She is sure to sing her chart topping songs like “Teenage Dream”, “California Gurls” and her recent hit “Firework.”  Her tour runs from June 7th in Atlanta, GA until August 14th in Santa Barbara, CA.

Mumford & Sons is another show that people are exceptionally anxious to get their hands on.  Tickets are usually hard to come because they typically only ever play small, intimate venues.  As of March 2011, their current album, Sigh No More, has sold over 1, 00,000 copies in the both the United States and the United Kingdom.  This is a band to keep your eye on.

Taylor Swift announced her current tour, Speak Now, back in December 2010.  Regardless, this concert is still very much a hot topic.    Ms. Swift has a very strong and broad fan base.  Her music style that combines pop and country makes her very appealing.

As the weather heats up, so does the concert season, check out Tickifieds for all your ticket needs!

Top Weekend Events – April 15 – 17

It’s WednesdDerrick Roseay, it’s Wednesday!  Two days until the weekend.

So what’s going on this weekend?  What’s the cool thing to do?  Well, let me tell ya.  The thing that pops out above and beyond everything else on our top ten list is the amount of country music.  Veterans Tim McGraw and the Avett brothers are joined by newer acts like Zac Brown Band and Sugarland and constant pillars like Kenny Chesney.  Even Mumford & Sons kind of has a country vibe to them.  Speaking of which, because Mumford & Sons only plays small venues, their tickets sell out fast!  What does that mean?  Demand is vastly more enormous than supply.  M&S technically is an English Folk Rock band.  In December 2010, the band earned Grammy Award nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rock Song (“Little Lion Man”).  Keep an eye on this band.  Their stock is going to further skyrocket very, very soon.

Zac Brown Band had nine nominations for the 46th annual Academy of Country Music Awards 2011, including Top Vocal Group of the Year, Album of the Year, Single Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Vocal Event of the Year.  As previously mentioned, this band is hot, hot, hot.  They appeal to many demographics, and they’re snapping up tickets and music as fast as they can.

NBA Playoffs are going into full swing this weekend.  Not surprisingly, the Celtics show up on the list.  I think Boston has the most sports successful town and possibly some of the most loyal fans.  Chicago isn’t far behind, as they appear on the list with the Bulls, White Sox and Cubs.  Derrick Rose of the Bulls continues to be the hometown hero and a sure winner of MVP. The White Sox are starting out very strong this year.  And, as much as it saddens me to say, given the way the Cubs have started this season, I’m pretty sure this isn’t going to be their year either.   One day!
