Top Events Week 6, 2012

With Super Bowl XLVI taking place this weekend it is no wonder that the top 3 events this week are all Super Bowl related.  The Super Bowl is always a hot ticket but this year is especially big due to the teams involved:  the New York Giants and New England Patriots.  Not only do you have two of the largest sports markets in the country involved but you also have the two that hate each other the most.  Most people think of the Boston-New York rivalry as between Red Sox and Yankees fans.  However, the hatred spills over to all sports (Celtics vs Knicks, Patriots vs Jets/Giants, Bruins vs Rangers, etc.).  The NFL took a lot of heat for hosting the Super Bowl in a cold weather city (Indianapolis) but it doesn’t look like they are going to have any trouble attracting fans to all the festivities.Super Bowl XLVI

Although Super Bowl event dominated this weeks events, there are also plenty of other events worth mentioning.  Some old favorites and some new.  So without further delay, here are your top 10 events this week…

Sometimes going to the many Super Bowl parties is better than actually going to the game. This one is one of the best being hosted by Peyton Manning and Mark Cuban.  The party includes a full open bar, plenty of food, and live entertainment including KATY PERRY!

3.  Maxim Super Bowl Tailgate Party 2/5/2012 Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis, IN

Top Weekend Events 12/16/2011-12/18/2011

Tim Tebow vs Tom BradyIt’s Wednesday and that means it is time to take a look at the most popular events going on across the country this weekend.  With college football on a hiatus until the bowl games begin next week, NFL football is back to dominating the search results at  Coming in at number 1 on the list is Tim Tebow’s Denver Broncos vs Tom Brady’s New England Patriots.  The ever polarizing Tim Tebow is 7-1 as a starter after he led yet another last minute comeback against the Chicago Bears.  The Broncos now have a 2 game lead over the Oakland Raiders (Denver owns the tie-breaker) in the AFC.  It seems as though Mr. Tebow has turned both fans and Bronco management into believers and ticket prices have absolutely sky-rocketed the past couple of weeks.

Coming in at #2 this week is the Monday Night matchup between two 10-3 teams, the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers.  OK, so this game isn’t actually taking place this weekend but we thought it was important enough to include on this list as this game is shaping up to be a great one.  At #3, the 0-13 Indianapolis Colts will be looking to pick up their first win of the season against the Tennessee Titans.  While this game doesn’t sound all that exciting fans are gobbling up these very affordable tickets (under $15 a ticket).

The other NFL games on the list also have some nice story-lines generating heavy fan interest.  In Oakland, the Raiders and Lions will face off both badly needing a win to stay in the playoff hunt.  In Kansas City, the 13-0 Green Bay Packers will be looking to stay undefeated after their last road game of the year.  Lastly, the 7-6 Chicago Bears will be looking to keep their playoff hopes alive against the Seattle Seahawks.  However, fan interest in this game is likely due to a substantial drop in ticket prices following the loss of both Jay Cutler and Matt Forte.

Making the list at #6 is our first college basketball game:  NC State vs the #1 Syracuse Orange.  College basketball is king in North Carolina so it’s not much of a surprise that the #1 team in the nation coming to Raleigh is driving ticket demand.  As the conference play starts up expect college basketball tickets to frequently make the list of top events.

Pulling up the rear are a few non-sports events.  The Radio City Christmas Spectacular makes the list for the 3rd week  in a row with their sold out show in Nashville, Trans-siberian Orchestra’s Christmas performance in Tulsa on Friday night comes in at #9, while Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s critically acclaimed “The Book of Mormon” slides in at #10.

NFL Playoff Picture (Week 10)

Jim-harbaugh-49ersJust past the midway point, the 2011-12 NFL Playoff picture is becoming to be a bit more clear.  Outside of the undefeated Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers, no teams are separating themselves from the pack (no pun intended). In the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers are 2nd best record wise at 7-1 but many football analysts still aren’t true believers in Jim Harbaugh’s squad.  They have only 1 quality win (over Detroit 25-19) and lost to a rather mediocre Dallas Cowboys team.  The Niners will face a big test this Sunday against the 6-2 NY Giants.  The Chicago Bears (5-3) and New Orleans Saints (6-3) have also played well at times but will need to show they can consistently win.  With little chance of catching the packers, the Bears have a huge game against the NFC North rival Lions.

In the AFC, the surprising Cincinnati Bengals (6-2) and Houston Texans (6-3) find themselves atop the division standings.  The New England Patriots are right there sitting at 6-3 but their defensive has come into question and Tom Brady has not looked himself the past few weeks.  Bill Belichick will look to get the Pats back on course this week against the Jets.  The opposite can be said of traditional AFC powerhouses the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-3) and Baltimore Ravens (6-2).  Both have looked better of late after starting off the season slow but the NY Jets and Buffalo Bills are ready to overtake them should they slip up.

In a league full or parity, we find a large group of teams bunched around the .500 mark.   The second half of the season looms large as many teams will be jockeying for a playoff spot.   If the season were to end today, here is who would be and who would be out of the 2012 NFL Playoffs.

Jets beat the Patriots in AFC Playoffs

The AFC Playoff Game this Sunday between the New England Patriots and the New York Jets went in a direction that perhaps not many people would have predicted.

Super star quarterback of the New England Patriots Tom Brady and his coach Bill Belichick took on New York Jet’s coach Rex Ryan and star quarterback Mark Sanchez at the Patriot’s home field of Gillette Stadium today. The buildup between the teams has been intense between the fans.

The lack of scoring from the Patriots has been very interesting, to say the least.   The Patriots offense has been almost completely pacified so far in this game by the Jets. Belichick, usually has within him to pull out a readjustment of his team should need be at halftime, but has not been able come up with anything today to turn his team around. Whatever motivating speech he gave his players, they’re obviously weren’t listening as the Patriots didn’t score in the second half.  Nick Folk, the kicker from New England missed a 30 yard field goal. His kick hooked wide left at the end. Folk had successfully made the the past 13 attempts from within 40 yards and nailed the game-winner last week against the Indianapolis Colts in Wild Card Weekend.

Time is ticked away and the Jets were obviously in command of the game.  Never to let up.

The Patriots went undefeated in 2007 before losing to the Giants in the Super Bowl. The Pats had a 14-2 season this year, unfortunately, with what just happened in this game against the Jets, it just doesn’t matter anymore.

Plenty of people would not be too sad if the New England Patriots didn’t make it to the Super Bowl AGAIN this year.  The Jets beat the Patriots 28 – 14.

In the game yesterday, the Pittsburgh Steelers took the Baltimore Ravens 31 – 24 in the first Divisional Round matchup of the playoffs.  The Steeler’s Blocking Receiver Hines Ward was on fire yesterday with his touchdown which tied the game at with a little over nine minutes left in the third quarter, and they never trailed again.  Antonio Brown was also extremely notable with his three catches for 75 yards, including his spectacular one handed, helmet hugging, over the shoulder, fourth quarter catch on third and 19.  Down right awesome.  The Steelers took the Ravens 31 – 24.

The New York Jets will play the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday, January 23rd in the Steeler’s hometown of Pittsburgh.

New England Patriots dealing with another major injury

The New England Patriots lost one of their team leaders for the remainder of the season as RB Kevin Faulk has a torn ACL, which he injured during the Jets game in week 2. The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) runs from the top back of your knee to the bottom front.  Sammy Morris, a candidate to take over the position, replaced him.  Faulk is a versatile player that can play on any down, run, catch passes, and block at a high level. This is major blow to the Patriots offense and it will affect the efficiency.

Faulk is in his twelfth year in the league and was drafted by the Patriots from LSU in second round in 1999. Many fans do not know the solid productivity he has been giving the New England Patriots the past decade. He is one of six players in the past decade to accumulate over 3000 yards rushing and 3000 yards receiving. His career yard per carry average is 4.2 and he has 31 career touchdowns. He is arguably the best running back in NFL history on third down plays as his ability to run, receive, and block is invaluable. Knowledgeable NFL fans know the true importance of Kevin Faulk to the Patriots. He is also been with the team for the longest period out of any player so he is one of the leaders in the locker room. Faulk is one of Tom Brady’s go to guys often throwing the ball underneath after going thru down the field progressions. The primary players at this point to take Faulk’s position are Sammy Morris and Newly acquired WR/RB Danny Woodhead (formerly of the New York Jets).

The Patriots have a lot of depth at the running back position as they traded away former number one pick Laurence Maroney. Wes Welker is coming off an ACL injury and now dealing with the Faulk injury is a major blow to the offense.
